Memories of Chandler’s Ford St. George’s Day Parade: Lyn Darbyshire

July 10, 2015 By Allison Symes 7 Comments

Earlier this year, I was pleased to meet Lyn Darbyshire MBE, former Scouting District Commissioner. Her insights into her involvement with The Gang Show led to my researching further into the show’s general history and Ralph Reader, the man behind the Gang Show.

Lyn also kindly shared her thoughts with me about the St. George’s Day Parade in Chandler’s Ford, which she was directly involved with for many years. [Read more…] about Memories of Chandler’s Ford St. George’s Day Parade: Lyn Darbyshire

Did Eurovision 2015 Inspire You to Learn Languages?

May 24, 2015 By Janet Williams 1 Comment

Yesterday I taught Chinese in the morning (Open University L197 – Beginners’ Chinese module), and came home to watch Eurovision in the evening.

I must admit it was a wonderful day to indulge myself in languages and multi-cultures for a whole day.

My colleague Fernando Rosell-Aguilar at the Open University wrote this wonderful piece: Parlez-vous Eurovision?. [Read more…] about Did Eurovision 2015 Inspire You to Learn Languages?

No Books = No Movies?

April 17, 2015 By Allison Symes 5 Comments

One of the great joys of stories is that there are so many formats in which to enjoy them. It is far easier now to have stories on demand especially via laptop, tablet or mobile. The Banbury Cross lady had music wherever she went but I’d rather have stories wherever I go!

There are flash fiction stories, standard length stories (usually up to 2000 words) [Read more…] about No Books = No Movies?

Solar Eclipse and Charles Wesley

March 29, 2015 By Hugh Benham 1 Comment

Charles Wesley

Just after recent solar eclipse was over, the first verse of an Easter hymn by Charles Wesley came into my mind:

Love’s redeeming work is done;
Fought the fight, the battle won:
Lo, our Sun’s eclipse is o’er!
Lo, he sets in blood no more.

The Voice And A Raven

December 28, 2014 By Mike Sedgwick 3 Comments

The most difficult job in television must be producing an advert that people will watch.

When the adverts come on, most people get up to make a cup of tea or visit the loo or maybe start to argue about what to watch next.

There have been some notable adverts worth watching. The first UK commercial TV advert was for SR toothpaste [Read more…] about The Voice And A Raven

December 13, 2014 By Hugh Benham Leave a Comment

The term is also used sometimes for items that are not congregational hymns.

Some would not normally form part of a church service – such as We wish you a happy Christmas or Past three o’clock. [Read more…] about Christmas Carol? Christmas Hymn?

My Favourite Childhood Christmas Memories in a Village

December 11, 2014 By chippy minton 8 Comments

I always start to feel that Christmas is getting near when the town centre gets dark before the shops close. So what do I remember of Christmases as a child (apart from the dark high street)?

Mum was very strict on the time when decorations could go up – not before the start of the school holidays. But my sisters and I would often (at least when we were old enough) be trusted to decorate the tree. Except [Read more…] about My Favourite Childhood Christmas Memories in a Village
