Remembrance Sunday falls on 14 November in 2021. The Chandler’s Ford community came together this morning to remember the service and sacrifice of those who have protected us and defended our freedoms.

Debbie Pearce from Debbie Pearce Photography kindly shares the photographs of the Remembrance Service at the Chandler’s Ford War Memorial with the Chandler’s Ford community. She captured the parade on Hursley Road and the service this morning at St. Boniface Church, Parish of Chandler’s Ford. Thank you Debbie.

Remembrance Sunday in Chandler’s Ford 2021

November 14, 2021 By SO53 News Leave a Comment

Today we remember and honour those who sacrificed for our freedom in Chandler’s Ford. Locally many people, young and old, observed a national two-minute silence at 11am. By 10.45am there was a large crowd at the Chandler’s Ford war memorial, at St. Boniface Church.

Representatives from local groups laid wreaths of poppies at the war memorial.

The Eastleigh Borough Council wreath was laid by John Caldwell, a previous mayor and an alderman.

Do you have some time to spare? Volunteer with Good Neighbours.

Chandler's Ford Good Neighbours

By Sheila Hardiman, Chandlers Ford Good Neighbours

Do you have some time to spare? Volunteer with Good Neighbours.

When I retired in 2010, I went on a couple of exciting and interesting holidays, had the house decorated, spent time in the garden and joined Monks Brook U3A. I was feeling I had time on my hands by Christmas! Luckily, I heard about Chandlers Ford Good Neighbours from a lady I took to a U3A interest group.

I contacted them and within a couple of weeks, I was signed up and driving for them. Not long afterwards, I became one of their coordinators as well. I enjoy meeting and chatting to many different clients; hearing about their families, comparing notes when they had worked where I did or have similar interests.

How do you Define Chandler’s Ford? What does Chandler’s Ford mean to you?

August 24, 2021 By SO53 News Leave a Comment

If you use Wikipedia today (24.07.3021), you may find the Featured Article today looks rather familiar:

Chandler's Ford featured in Wikipedia 24.08.2021 (screenshot 24.08.2021)
Chandler’s Ford featured in Wikipedia 24.08.2021 (screenshot 24.08.2021)

“The Chandler’s Ford shooting was an attempted robbery on 13 September 2007 in which two men were shot dead by officers of London’s Metropolitan Police while robbing a cash-in-transit van. The Met had been tracking a gang who had stolen an estimated £500,000 from security vans and learned that the gang intended to rob the HSBC bank in Chandler’s Ford.”

Not sure how often Chandler’s Ford gets the global attention like today.

However we don’t think the community is proud to be defined by “The Chandler’s Ford Shooting”. [Read more…] about How do you Define Chandler’s Ford? What does Chandler’s Ford mean to you?

Chandlers Ford u3a – New Website Launched

March 4, 2021 By SO53 News Leave a Comment

Chandlers Fod u3a

The u3a nationally has been going through a re-branding of late and the new Chandlers Ford u3a website launched only last week.

The Chandlers Ford u3a group was formed in March 1998 and now has more than 400 members. The Chandlers Ford u3a would normally meet on the 3rd Monday at 2pm of each month at the Dovetail Centre of the Methodist Church in Winchester Road, but they have had to resort to Zoom of late.

Chandlers Fod u3a
Chandlers Fod u3a

Members of the u3a have a wealth of knowledge, skills and experience which as a self-help group can be shared with others. We have around 50 special interest groups which meet in members homes covering topics such as languages at varying levels, the arts, literature, history and science. We also have outings to theatres and gardens, local places of interest, and countryside walks.

A u3a is a learning co-operative of older people, which enables members to share many educational, creative and leisure activities. Activities are organised mainly in small groups that meet regularly, often in each other’s homes. Members, through sharing their knowledge, skills and experience, learn from each other.

Although all local u3as remain operationally independent, they are members of The Third Age Trust. As such they must abide by both the original Objects and Principles written by Peter Laslett in 1981 and the Principles of the u3a Movement (2014).

The Trust is a national, umbrella body (a registered charity and limited company) which represents all u3as in the UK at national and international level. It is run by a National Executive Committee democratically elected from the membership and offers a range of services, to support and advise local u3as.

December 11, 2020 By SO53 News 2 Comments

Chalvington Road, Chandler's Ford, Christmas 2020

Chalvington Road in Chandler’s Ford has some fantastic Christmas lights and decorations. The neighbourhood has come together and illuminated the road.

Our friend Jill Mayes has shared these photos with us that she has taken on her walks. She particularly loves the lit up village which had falling snow in the window.

Take a walk along Chalvington Road and see if you can spot the 12 Days of Christmas.

The 12 Days of Christmas are all different – it could be a picture in a window, or something in a front garden. It could be big or small. The trail went live at 6pm on Saturday December 5th, and will run until Christmas Day.

Take your time and enjoy the lights on Chalvington Road.
