Eastleigh Remembers – Truly Memorable

September 15, 2018 By Janet Williams 2 Comments

Eastleigh is marking the 100th anniversary year of the end of the first world war today. The event pays tribute to Eastleigh’s role in the First World War.

In Eastleigh this afternoon, I visited a re-enactment of a field hospital, some vintage military vehicles, and have seen great displays by charities and businesses, such as Hampshire Scouts, One Community, Defense Medical Welfare Service, British Legion, Eastleigh and District Local History Society, Eastleigh Gurkha Nepalese Association, Royal Air Forces Association, the Rotary Club, Air Cadets, Peter Green, and local author Paul Nolan. Thornden CommunityWind Band with the 14th Eastleigh Scout and Guide Band - the Spitfire, 1st April 2017.

Review: The Spitfires Band (5th Nov 2016) and My Other Ramblings

November 10, 2016 By Cockhorse 1 Comment

The fame of The Spitfires Band of the 14th Eastleigh Scout and Guides has spread to the East Midlands, where one can say, man to man, “Ey up m’ (my) duck” and not be thought an odd-ball.

So we ventured to the sunny South for a delight of hearing and sight – the music of the band and the expertise of the Corp of Drums. [Read more…] about Review: The Spitfires Band (5th Nov 2016) and My Other Ramblings

Review: The Spitfires: Last Night of the Proms 2016 – the 14th Eastleigh Scout and Guide Band

November 9, 2016 By chippy minton 3 Comments

As expected, The 14th Eastleigh Scout and Guide Band “The Spitfires” gave an outstanding performance at their concert on 5th November. A varied programme included musicals, military marches, and classical pieces – even The Village People’s music got a look in.

The concert included two soloists. The first sang Nessun Dorma – a piece normally heard as a tenor voice, but no way diminished by the soprano (I think it was) at the concert. A wonderful voice, singing the high notes with as much precision and clarity as the lower ones. Review: The 14th Eastleigh Scout and Guide Band St. George’s Day Concert 2016

April 26, 2016 By chippy minton 2 Comments

The Spitfires 14th Eastleigh Scout and Guide Band "The Spitfires" 2016 St George's Day concert Chandler's Ford Methodist Church.

The 14th Eastleigh Scout and Guide Band (better known as The Spitfires) returned to Chandler’s Ford Methodist Church last weekend for a St George’s Day concert in aid of One Community.

As we have come to expect from a band of such high calibre, the concert showcased the musician’s skills and wide repertoire. We were also treated to a display by the band’s Corps of Drums, who had been busy with other scouting activities at the October concert.

Review: The Spitfires in Concert – the 14th Eastleigh Scout and Guide Band

October 18, 2015 By chippy minton Leave a Comment

The Spitfires – the 14th Eastleigh Scout and Guide Band performed an all new concert at The Methodist Church in Chandler’s Ford on Saturday evening, 17th October 2015. “All new” in that all the pieces were being performed by the band for the first time.

A church may seem an unlikely venue for a band concert, but the Chandler’s Ford Methodist Church proved to be an excellent one. [Read more…] about Review: The Spitfires in Concert – the 14th Eastleigh Scout and Guide Band

Memories of Chandler’s Ford St. George’s Day Parade: Lyn Darbyshire

July 10, 2015 By Allison Symes 7 Comments

Earlier this year, I was pleased to meet Lyn Darbyshire MBE, former Scouting District Commissioner. Her insights into her involvement with The Gang Show led to my researching further into the show’s general history and Ralph Reader, the man behind the Gang Show.

Lyn also kindly shared her thoughts with me about the St. George’s Day Parade in Chandler’s Ford, which she was directly involved with for many years. [Read more…] about Memories of Chandler’s Ford St. George’s Day Parade: Lyn Darbyshire
