Chandler’s Ford School Days: 1970s – 1980s by Betty Brooking

May 4, 2016 By Betty Brooking 27 Comments

When we lived on the Oakmount estate in the 70s, our son first went to Mrs Vincent’s nursery school at the Methodist Church Hall Fryern Hill.

He then started infant school in the annex with Mrs Moye at Kings Road School Chandler’s Ford (She always ran the sweet stall at the school’s annual fete, held at Merdon Avenue School). [Read more…] about Chandler’s Ford School Days: 1970s – 1980s by Betty Brooking

Memories of Chandler’s Ford St. George’s Day Parade: Lyn Darbyshire

July 10, 2015 By Allison Symes 7 Comments

Earlier this year, I was pleased to meet Lyn Darbyshire MBE, former Scouting District Commissioner. Her insights into her involvement with The Gang Show led to my researching further into the show’s general history and Ralph Reader, the man behind the Gang Show.

Lyn also kindly shared her thoughts with me about the St. George’s Day Parade in Chandler’s Ford, which she was directly involved with for many years. [Read more…] about Memories of Chandler’s Ford St. George’s Day Parade: Lyn Darbyshire

Growing up in Chandler’s Ford: 1950s – 1960s: Paper Boy; North End School (Part 2)

June 22, 2015 By Martin Napier 23 Comments

growing up in Chandler's Ford Martin Napier

I grew up in Chandler’s Ford in the 1950s and 1960s.

When I was about 12 years old, I started my first (part-time) job.

This was as a Saturday van-boy for Mr Smith, a greengrocer, who had a shop opposite “The Hut” on Bournemouth Road. (not to be confused with Mr Smith who had a grocers shop in Hursley Road, opposite the Railway Station.) growing up in Chandler's Ford Martin Napier

I was born, not in Chandler’s Ford, but in Tooting, South London, in 1947.

My father came from Lancashire, and my mother from Tooting.

We lived in Streatham, a mile or two from Tooting, but just before my second birthday, my mother died from influenza. [Read more…] about Growing up in Chandler’s Ford: 1950s – 1960s (Part 1)

Chandler’s Ford Policing: Burglaries and Traffic Problems. Eastleigh Police Station to Close

April 1, 2015 By Mike Sedgwick 10 Comments

Chandelr's Ford policing

There was a PACT Meeting (Police and Community Together) at Merdon School on Wednesday evening 25 March. It was attended by many Neighbourhood Watch people.

Previous PACT meeting in December last year had a low turnout (only 11 people) but on this occasion there were about 40 people present.

Perhaps numbers were up because of the recent burglaries in Chandler’s Ford. [Read more…] about Chandler’s Ford Policing: Burglaries and Traffic Problems. Eastleigh Police Station to Close

Bye-Bye Ridge Rider: Much Needed TLC for Fryern Recreation Ground

March 8, 2015 By Nicky Head 1 Comment

Fryern recreation ground Chandler's Ford: bye-bye Ridge Rider.

Fryern Park has been my park since I was seven years old, and since my school was next door (Fryern School), I pretty much dragged my Mum there every day.

During the holidays it was used even more, and as I became older my friends and I would choose to meet up and sit on the grass hill and chat, sometimes for hours!

My favourite piece of play equipment [Read more…] about Bye-Bye Ridge Rider: Much Needed TLC for Fryern Recreation Ground
