Adaptations

March 1, 2019 By Allison Symes 6 Comments

Do you like adaptations of your favourite stories? I guess the answer to that is “yes, if it works” and then it is up to us to decide whether it does or not.

Famously The Birds by Alfred Hitchcock is an adaptation of Daphne du Maurier’s short story of the same name so it isn’t just about novels being “translated” to a different media. [Read more…] about Adaptations

What’s Your Favourite Film Theme? My Top Ten

December 9, 2016 By Allison Symes 6 Comments

Feature Image: Top 10 Film Themes - image via Pixabay

One of the highlight Chandler’s Ford Today posts for me this year was the Top Ten Classical Music Greats list and many thanks to all who added wonderful contributions to this. I’ve loved listening to them all.

The biggest problem I had was in working out which piece had to go into this list. It left me with a number of pieces I would have loved to have included but very conveniently these are film scores/extracts so a new post on Top Ten Film Themes would seem to be in order! The Magic of Words: David Bowie and Alan Rickman

January 22, 2016 By Allison Symes 7 Comments

I’ve found one side benefit of being a writer is that I appreciate words more than I did before I wrote seriously. Writing short stories, novels and blog posts such as this have all given me a greater appreciation of how other writers work.  But it also makes me aware there are several ways to work with words.

It is ironic then that two of my heroes, who worked with words albeit in different ways, should both recently have died of cancer at 69. [Read more…] about The Magic of Words: David Bowie and Alan Rickman

Symbols of a Country

July 30, 2015 By Ben Williams 1 Comment

This summer, I’ll be visiting three countries – Singapore, Australia and Malaysia.

All three have things which instantly define them. Singapore has the Merlion, Australia has the Opera House (which I sadly won’t be able to see this trip), Ayer’s Rock and kangaroos, both of which I will be able to see, while Malaysia has the Patronas Towers.

This led me to think about what defines a country. [Read more…] about Symbols of a Country

No Books = No Movies?

April 17, 2015 By Allison Symes 5 Comments

One of the great joys of stories is that there are so many formats in which to enjoy them. It is far easier now to have stories on demand especially via laptop, tablet or mobile. The Banbury Cross lady had music wherever she went but I’d rather have stories wherever I go!

There are flash fiction stories, standard length stories (usually up to 2000 words) [Read more…] about No Books = No Movies?

The Doctor Who Experience by Allison Symes

April 3, 2015 By Allison Symes 14 Comments

The Doctor Who Experience by Allison Symes

I’ve loved Doctor Who since I was a child. I was gripped by the stories, terrified by the Daleks (while at the same time enjoying every moment of being terrified!) and couldn’t wait to tune in to the following week’s edition.

As I was growing up you had one story spread over several parts and it seemed an age before I was to find out if Tom Baker, “my Doctor”, was going to pull the leads apart that would lead to the destruction of the Daleks in Genesis of the Daleks.
