June 22, 2015 By Martin Napier 23 Comments

growing up in Chandler's Ford Martin Napier

I grew up in Chandler’s Ford in the 1950s and 1960s.

When I was about 12 years old, I started my first (part-time) job.

This was as a Saturday van-boy for Mr Smith, a greengrocer, who had a shop opposite “The Hut” on Bournemouth Road. (not to be confused with Mr Smith who had a grocers shop in Hursley Road, opposite the Railway Station.) Now I have also become a Friend of Eastleigh Museum. [Read more…] about Glorious Honey at Eastleigh Museum

I was born, not in Chandler’s Ford, but in Tooting, South London, in 1947.

My father came from Lancashire, and my mother from Tooting.

We lived in Streatham, a mile or two from Tooting, but just before my second birthday, my mother died from influenza. [Read more…] about Growing up in Chandler’s Ford: 1950s – 1960s (Part 1)

GCSE Maths Problem: Hannah’s Sweets

June 9, 2015 By chippy minton 6 Comments

There’s been a lot of talk on social (and other) media about “that maths question”. A problem in last week’s GCSE Maths paper that stumped a whole cohort of candidates.

I suppose the resultant Twitter storm is the modern day equivalent of sitting outside the school gates discussing the exam that we had just taken. [Read more…] about GCSE Maths Problem: Hannah’s Sweets

I am lucky enough to have a friend who works for the Royal Horticultural Society (RHS), who got two free tickets to the show on Friday. So off to London I went, meeting up with my friend at Waterloo.

After a quick Tube journey to Sloane Square we emerged onto the busy London street and facing the station was a ticket tout offering Flower show tickets! [Read more…] about The Splendour of Chelsea Flower Show 2015

Visit to Marwell Zoo and Animal Conservation

May 31, 2015 By Mike Sedgwick 1 Comment

Marwell Zoo

Excitement for the grandchildren on the day of a visit to Marwell Zoo. Parents primed, grandparents had the tickets but it was raining stair rods. So we went to the Pub for lunch. As the bill was paid, the air cleared and the sun came out.

Many people have mixed feelings about zoos and I am one of them. There is nothing to beat the thrill of seeing a wild animal in its natural surroundings even if it is only a glimpse. [Read more…] about Visit to Marwell Zoo and Animal Conservation

In the Gang Show: Lyn Darbyshire

May 29, 2015 By Allison Symes 11 Comments

One thing I love about writing for Chandler’s Ford Today is how one subject leads to another.

For instance, my interview with local author, Richard Hardie, led to my wanting to discover more about The Gang Shows.

Richard wrote one of these with the great Sir Terry Pratchett.  [Read more…] about In the Gang Show: Lyn Darbyshire

Exams “Dumbed Down”? View of an Invigilator

May 27, 2015 By Richard Hardie 5 Comments

Kids Today!!!!

When I was young, we never behaved like kids do today!

Actually I think we did, or we’d have liked to, except the knowledge that parents, policemen and shop keepers would give us a clip around the ear stopped us going too far. [Read more…] about Exams “Dumbed Down”? View of an Invigilator

Did Eurovision 2015 Inspire You to Learn Languages?

May 24, 2015 By Janet Williams 1 Comment

Yesterday I taught Chinese in the morning (Open University L197 – Beginners’ Chinese module), and came home to watch Eurovision in the evening.

I must admit it was a wonderful day to indulge myself in languages and multi-cultures for a whole day.

My colleague Fernando Rosell-Aguilar at the Open University wrote this wonderful piece: Parlez-vous Eurovision?. [Read more…] about Did Eurovision 2015 Inspire You to Learn Languages?
