Becoming a Pilgrim of Hope – Christmas Message from Churches Together in Chandler’s Ford – 2024

Nativity Scene 2024 Christmas Article

Written by Rev Deacon Paul Owen
St Edward the Confessor Catholic Church (part of the Catholic Parish of St Swithun Wells)
on behalf of Churches Together in Chandler’s Ford

We are well into December and our senses are full of the coming of Christmas. Whether it’s the Christmas lights springing up all over the area; the Christmas songs we hear all the time in shops or on the radio; the adverts on the TV encouraging us to buy more food and presents than we need. But this year, perhaps more so than in previous years, we prepare for Christmas in a world faced with difficult times. A world in which suffering, wars and political uncertainty are a greater threat than they have been for many years.

It got me thinking about what it is that is special for us as we approach another Christmas. What is it we look for at Christmas? For us Christians, this period of preparation for Christmas is called Advent. The central theme of Advent for all Christians is hope. But for each one of us, where do we find our hope this Christmas?

Star of Wonder

December 12, 2023 By Christine Clark 3 Comments

We read in Matthew’s Gospel that the magi observed the star at the nativity ‘at its rising’. Knowing this to be a sign fulfilling a prophecy of a Messiah’s birth, they followed it to Bethlehem. But what was this star? The last 2000 years has given us a feast of knowledge based on solid research, so that we are now in a position to unwrap the story of this wonderful and significant sign.

Christmas Message by Churches Together in Chandler’s Ford – 2023

December 4, 2023 By Churches Together in Chandler's Ford Leave a Comment

Willow tree nativity set - from Rev Hayley Richens

‘Opening their treasure-chests, they offered him gifts…’ (Matthew 2:11)

I wonder what sort of gift-giver you are? Do you have creative ideas, effortlessly putting together fun, interesting and unique Christmas presents for your loved ones? Maybe you reflect on each person on your list and come up with perfectly personalised gifts? Perhaps you’re on the other end of the spectrum and pick up random items, in blind panic, on Christmas Eve? Most people are probably somewhere in the middle, working their way through a list of names and doing their best to find a meaningful gift.

As I have been re-reading the Christmas story this year the above words from the bible have stuck in my mind. They come from the story of the wise men who found the baby Jesus at the end of their journey. Filled with joy they bowed down, paid homage and opened their treasure-chests, and offered him gifts… The wise men lived in turbulent times and were overwhelmed with joy in finding the new king who would rule with God’s justice and bring peace.

The Posada Journey

December 2, 2023 By Christine Clark 1 Comment

Nativity display at Salvation Army in Eastleigh

“Mary and Joseph played with my Barbie dolls. But they didn’t have Santa hats to wear.” Alys, aged six, and her brother Jamie, three, were just two of the children who took part in the local Posada journey here in Chandler’s Ford. This annual event is become increasingly common in the weeks of Advent, as we prepare for Christmas.

The journey involves the nativity figures of Mary and Joseph, who will later adorn the crib in church during the Christmas season. The idea is that they make their way around the area, staying in people’s homes, usually for one night, before they move – or are moved – on. Families and individuals sign up for a roster so that the holy couple is passed from home to home each day. [Read more…] about The Posada Journey

Mary’s Christmas Story – In Her Own Words

December 17, 2022 By Christine Clark 4 Comments

MARY’S STORY

Oh, I’m so tired. I’m glad I’m able to ride some of the time on Eysl, our donkey, though I do have to walk some of the time, to give him a rest too. I hope we’re nearly there. My back aches and I’ve had some pains – I wonder if that’s the baby coming. I haven’t mentioned those to Joseph – I don’t want to worry him. He’s already worrying about where we‘ll stay when we reach Bethlehem, what with so many people on the road going for the census, like us.

I’m tired and I’m afraid. I’m afraid of what people say about me being pregnant and unmarried. Afraid that the shame will mean we can’t find anywhere to sleep tonight. Afraid of what having the baby – the Son of God – will mean for the family. Will Joseph and I be able to have a normal family life? I’m afraid of what the future holds for us all.

I do love Joseph. I already did, when we got betrothed. But then when I had to tell him I was with child, I was sure he’d want to walk away. He told me he thought he might, but without making too much of a fuss. But he didn’t, he said he’d stand by me and the baby. He told me he had a dream where an angel told him to take me as his wife, that what I’d said was true – that the baby was conceived by the Holy Spirit, that it’ll be a boy and we’re to call him Jesus. And that he’ll save people from their sins. I’m not sure how that last bit works – but we’ll see. I wonder if it’s what the prophets foretold all those years ago. Could he be the Messiah? My little baby? [Read more…] about Mary’s Christmas Story – In Her Own Words

Christmas Angels – Churches Together in Chandler‘s Ford

November 28, 2022 By Churches Together in Chandler's Ford Leave a Comment

Belief in angels is common to many religions, and some recent research also shows some atheists admitting to believing in them. They are important in the Islamic tradition as well as Jewish and Christian faiths. Angels feature in popular culture, films, songs, and street art including works of Banksy. Some people believe in ‘guardian angels’ and others think of them more as messengers from God.

Bringing a little joy into Chandler's Ford community this Christmas through the knitted angels.
Bringing a little joy into Chandler’s Ford community this Christmas through the knitted angels.

At this time of year Christians think of the angels who brought messages to Mary and to Joseph, and those witnessed by shepherds; first a single angel bringing the good news of the birth of Jesus and then many, singing of peace on earth.

In these unsettled times, news of joy and peace are much needed and so Churches Together in Chandler’s Ford have combined to bring a little joy into our community this Christmas through the knitted angels that you will find popping up around the streets and public places in mid-December. Nativity Experience returns – 19 to 24 November

November 13, 2022 By chippy minton 2 Comments

After a two-year break caused by the Covid pandemic, Eastleigh Baptist Church’s much-loved interactive Nativity Experience is back.  Bigger and better than before –with an additional and exciting attraction.

The body of the church will be transformed to take visitors on a journey through different stages of the Christmas story.   The layout has been inspired by the ancient tradition of a labyrinth that takes a person on a contemplative and reflective spiritual journey.  The maze at the top of Winchester’s St Catherine’s Hill was possibly an example. The Animals’ Christmas

December 18, 2021 By Christine Clark Leave a Comment

The Animals' Christmas - by Aileen Urquhart (Author), Emma Repetti (Illustrator)

Imagine you’re a bystander, just happening to be there, watching the nativity story unfold. Not a convenient passer-by but … an animal. The Christmas story is full of animals, from donkeys and oxen to sheep and camels, so – why not?

Sarah the spider, resident of Mary’s home in Nazareth (note: Mary doesn’t sweep away Sarah’s web because it catches the flies) observes Gabriel and the Annunciation. Daniel the donkey carries Mary and Joseph to the stable in Bethlehem where he also finds rest. Obadiah the ox, who lives in this stable, grudgingly makes room for the interloper and then is present at Jesus’ birth. Lilah the lamb comes with the shepherds, having seen the angel with the amazing news, and Khalid the camel, along with his mates Kanika and Keb, are the transport for the wise men as they follow the star.

Confusion at the post office

November 26, 2021 By chippy minton 2 Comments

Pile of gifts

A couple of weeks ago I went to post Christmas presents to the ex-patriot members of my family.  “I’ll only be ten minutes” I told Mrs. Chippy.  After all, the packages were already wrapped and addressed.  I could avoid queuing by going to the self-service machines; print out a postage label; job done.  What could possibly go wrong? Book Lists

October 29, 2021 By Allison Symes Leave a Comment

Image Credit:  Images created in Book Brush using Pixabay images (and the same goes for the video. I find Book Brush to be a very useful designing tool).

I make two book lists a year – one for a certain festival coming up in December (yes, Christmas, there I’ve said it!) and another for my birthday. Always great fun to get these together. It also means I’m easy to buy for (so that helps my better half). And I mix up my choice of format for books – paperback, Kindle, and sometimes audio.

The Christmas Jigsaw Tradition

January 2, 2021 By chippy minton 11 Comments

partially complete jigsaw - marmite

One of my childhood family’s traditional Christmas holiday pastimes was to complete a jigsaw puzzle (or two).  Christmas presents generally included at least one puzzle.  This year’s Covid-19 restrictions on travel and socialising made it a good time to resurrect the tradition with my adult family.

There is something incredibly relaxing and therapeutic about tacking a jigsaw puzzle.  You can’t rush a jigsaw; it takes as long as it takes.  They are addictive too – once you’ve started you have to keep going.  One evening, Mrs Chippy and I had to remind ourselves that it was 11.30 pm and we really should be going to bed.  I have been known to stay up into the early hours in order to finish a puzzle. Rumours of a cancelled Christmas have been greatly over-exaggerated

December 20, 2020 By chippy minton 7 Comments

Headlines across many of the today’s Sunday papers have been along the lines of “Christmas is Cancelled”, “The virus that stole Christmas” and other such hyperbole.  No, Christmas is not cancelled; Christmas has not been stolen.

December 25, Christmas Day, will still arrive this Friday.  OK, it may arrive in a different way than expected and we may have to spend a couple of days this week in reassessing and rearranging our plans.  But arrive it will surely do.

Negative language such as “killed”, “cancelled” and “ruined” gives pessimistic connotations to the thought of a scaled-back Christmas.  So rather than a problem, let’s see this as an opportunity. [Read more…] about Rumours of a cancelled Christmas have been greatly over-exaggerated

Festive Afternoon Tea

December 20, 2020 By chippy minton 2 Comments

Christmas may unexpectedly be being scaled back in many households, but there is still time to give yourself an indulgent treat.

Following the success of the takeaway afternoon tea in the summer, the Blackbird Café at Pavilion on the Park (Kingfisher Road) are offering a festive afternoon tea, available for delivery in the local area up to Christmas Eve.

Two rounds of sandwiches, a small Yorkshire pudding with beef and horseradish, a pig in blanket, two slices of cake (one fruit, one sponge) and a mince pie.  A Christmas cracker is also supplied, and a tea bag for the essential accompanying beverage.  Gluten-free and vegetarian options are available. ‘O Come, All Ye Faithful’ – Churches Together in Chandler’s Ford

December 13, 2020 By Churches Together in Chandler's Ford Leave a Comment

Christmas 2020 - God is with you, with me, and with us.
https://chandlersfordtoday.co.uk/wp-content/uploads/2020/12/CT-Oh-Come-All-Ye-Faithful-2-1.mp3

Usually at this time of year musicians and singers from the Churches of Chandler’s Ford join forces to serenade Christmas shoppers in our local ASDA with a selection of carols. This year COVID restrictions and regulations have meant it is not possible but instead we were invited to provide a carol for the store radio in December.

This very familiar carol , with a modern twist is an invitation to gather joyfully to celebrate the birth of Jesus. Gathering and Joy may feel in short supply this year but Christians everywhere believe that when God came in Jesus to share the sufferings of humanity he showed his love for us and that is a cause for celebration.

Whoever you are with this Christmas, God is with us. We invite you to share in the comfort of this. We wish you a joyful Christmas.

Christmas 2020 - God is with you, with me, and with us.
Christmas 2020 – God is with you, with me, and with us.
