Chandler’s Ford War Memorial. Can You Help?

April 30, 2014 By Margaret Doores 20 Comments

Margaret Doores on Chandler's Ford War Memorial

Centenary of World War One 1914 -1918

Commemorations of the Fallen of World War One will start this year and continue through the next four years until the end of 2018. It is not intended that these commemorations are in any way an attempt to glorify war but rather a way of an acknowledgment of the sacrifices made by millions of people, both military and civilian. Ant Gardiner: New Scouts District Commissioner

April 27, 2014 By Janet Williams 5 Comments

I spoke to Ant Gardiner this afternoon before the Chandler’s Ford St. George’s Day Parade started.

Ant is only 38 years old. He is now the new District Commissioner of the Chandler’s Ford District Scouts, leading about 700 youngsters in Chandler’s Ford. Ant replaced Carolyn Darbyshire MBE, who took charge since 1999 and has built a successful team in Chandler’s Ford. [Read more…] about Ant Gardiner: New Scouts District Commissioner

White for Easter

April 25, 2014 By Hugh Benham 6 Comments

Janet’s post Easter Day – From Tragedy To Triumph is a fine account of a very memorable Easter celebration.

In most years the daffodils have been yellow – this year’s late Easter probably helps to explain the change of colour.

White is, however, a traditional colour for Easter.

In his poem ‘Loveliest of trees’ [Read more…] about White for Easter

Who Embodies The Nation?

April 22, 2014 By Ben Williams 11 Comments

Queen Elizabeth II

The Sunday Times had an interesting article last week about a survey. Young people were asked: Who embodies Britain?

There are some pretty interesting choices, some obvious ones and some questionable ones. Let’s take a look…

The person who embodies the nation the most is, of course, the Queen. 63% of young people thought she embodied Britain perfectly, followed by [Read more…] about Who Embodies The Nation?

Easter Day – from Tragedy to Triumph

April 20, 2014 By Janet Williams 2 Comments

At St. Boniface Church this morning, a large wooden cross decked out with daffodils was brought in to the church. It was a beautiful scene.

As the music director Hugh Benham explained in this post, during Lent at the parish church, a large wooden cross is on display, and on Good Friday the altar is bare. Symbols of the Passion are laid at the foot of this cross [Read more…] about Easter Day – from Tragedy to Triumph

Nottingham for a Holiday?

April 20, 2014 By Mike Sedgwick 5 Comments

Attenborough Nature Reserve. Mute Swan.

You would not go to Nottingham for a holiday would you? It is said to be the murder capital of the UK. Cricket lovers go for test matches at Trent Bridge and there is the legend of Robin Hood.

We went to visit a friend and found a delightful haven at the Attenborough Nature Centre & Reserve. It is a mere 5 miles from the city centre. [Read more…] about Nottingham for a Holiday?

Radio Caroline: Golden Anniversary

April 18, 2014 By chippy minton 7 Comments

Radio Caroline

Fifty years ago on 28 March 1964, Radio Caroline stated broadcasting. It’s quite difficult with our plethora of pop music radio stations (most of them playing the same old crap) to realise just what a revolution In British broadcasting history Radio Caroline was.

Let me set the context.

In the 1960s British broadcasting was [Read more…] about Radio Caroline: Golden Anniversary

Malaysian High Commission In London

April 17, 2014 By Janet Williams 7 Comments

London Malaysian High Commission

I had an adventure in London last week and somehow got lost.

I visited the Malaysian High Commission in Belgrave Square near Hyde Park Corner at 8am, and waited for the door to be opened. My purpose was to get my passport renewed.

I wasn’t the first visitor. A lady in her 60s travelled from Scotland through the night [Read more…] about Malaysian High Commission In London

Richard Stock: Fundraising for Ovacome

April 14, 2014 By Roger Clark 2 Comments

Richard Stock - London Marathon 13th April 2014. Richard raises money for Ovacome in memory of Dr. Lisa-Jayne Clark from Chandler’s Ford.

I’m pleased to tell you that Richard Stock completed the London Marathon in just over 4 hours yesterday.

This is a remarkable achievement for somebody who had never run a full marathon and indeed had never run over 20 miles!

Richard ran the marathon to raise money for Ovacome, in memory of my daughter, Dr. Lisa-Jayne Clark, [Read more…] about Richard Stock: Fundraising for Ovacome

English Spelling

April 13, 2014 By Hugh Benham 1 Comment

English Spelling

English spelling at times seems completely random, but it is sometimes systematic, even if there seems no good reason for the system, and if exceptions can still be found!

Take the use of single L and double L at the end of a word for example. [Read more…] about English Spelling

The Crossroad: Brilliant Performance

April 10, 2014 By Janet Williams 4 Comments

If you haven’t seen The Crossroad, musical drama at Chandler’s Ford Methodist Church, I would suggest you grasp the chance to see it.

There are two more shows: Friday and Saturday (11th and 12th of April) at 7.30pm.

I watched The Crossroad with my son this evening. The story was thought-provoking. [Read more…] about The Crossroad: Brilliant Performance

What Is Lent All About?

April 8, 2014 By chippy minton 12 Comments

Lent 2014. Lent is about self-reflection and assessing your spiritual life.

I’ve given up sweets, cakes and biscuits for Lent. Possibly a bad choice, and each year I get to about the halfway point and think that maybe next year I’ll give up something I don’t like as much.

But that’s not really the point. In fact, giving up things per se isn’t really the point. It’s more to do with doing some self-reflection and assessing your spiritual life, [Read more…] about What Is Lent All About?

Tomb Sweeping Day

April 5, 2014 By Janet Williams 3 Comments

Tomb Sweeping Day - image by Yellow on Flickr. Taichung City, Taiwan, 2012.

I have almost forgotten today is the Tomb Sweeping Day to the Chinese people.

I was reminded of the festival today when I read that the Chinese families of Chinese passengers aboard Malaysia Airlines Flight MH370 are still hopeful.

Tomb Sweeping Day is also known as the Qing Ming Festival 清明节, literally Clear Bright Festival [Read more…] about Tomb Sweeping Day

The Passion of Christ at St. Boniface

April 2, 2014 By Hugh Benham 7 Comments

Crucifixion - Changi Mural by POW Stanley Warren, from 1942 - 1943.

Beginning on 6 April 2014 is the last part of Lent – Passiontide as it’s often called. The Christian story approaches one of its climaxes with the crucifixion of Jesus Christ. Four writers tell the story in the Bible – Matthew, Mark, Luke and John – several decades after it happened.

Not surprisingly they have slightly different accounts of what happened, but one constant is this worrying truth. The religious leaders of the day [Read more…] about The Passion of Christ at St. Boniface

Visit To Southampton Old Cemetery

March 28, 2014 By Ben Williams 3 Comments

Southampton Old Cemetery. Image by Matt via Flickr.

On Monday, I went to Southampton on a visit to Southampton Old Cemetery with some of my classmates from Toynbee School in Chandler’s Ford as we were on a history trip. I found out several interesting facts about the cemetery and the area.

The cemetery was built in the 1840s and over the years, it slowly became an area of over 27 acres. [Read more…] about Visit To Southampton Old Cemetery

Special Day Out

March 23, 2014 By Mike Sedgwick 1 Comment

We all have days out. Sometimes carefully planned and looked forward to, sometimes more spontaneous. All are enjoyable but sometimes a day turns out to be really special, better than expected.

Janet’s walk through Hocombe Mead was extra special.

We had one last week. [Read more…] about Special Day Out

Eye Of The Pacific Gray Whale

March 2, 2014 By Roger Clark Leave a Comment

San Ignacio - Eye of the Gray. Image by Roger Clark.

I took this photograph of a Pacific Gray Whale recently in the San Ignacio Lagoon off the coast of Baja, Mexico.

Gray Whales often approach the Panga (boat) when they want to seek human interaction. They are happy to be stroked and petted as they come alongside the boat. They will even tease with a splash, a spout of  air or a head butt! [Read more…] about Eye Of The Pacific Gray Whale
