How Often Have You Used a £50 Note?

June 17, 2014 By chippy minton 6 Comments

How often have you used a £50 note?

My guess is “not very often”. In fact, I’ve got one at home at the moment, and am not too sure what to do with it. The only time I’ve used them was an occasion when I needed to pay a cash deposit, and £50 notes was the easiest way to carry it.

My mother visited the UK recently and she [Read more…] about How Often Have You Used a £50 Note?

Father’s Day and Chinese War of Resistance

June 15, 2014 By Janet Williams 2 Comments

When I was an undergraduate student in Taiwan, I was surprised to learn that Father’s Day in Taiwan is actually on the 8th of August.

The number eight is pronounced as bā in Mandarin Chinese. 8/8 is pronounced bā – bā, close to the pronunciation of father – 爸爸 bàba.

Though Father’s Day is [Read more…] about Father’s Day and Chinese War of Resistance

The Psycology of Cats

June 12, 2014 By Ben Williams 9 Comments

Today my mum was upset because our cat Billy has caused some problems in the neighbourhood. Billy keeps running away and stealing food.

I told my mum not to be worried as cats are wild and impossible to properly train. This reminds me of a blog post I wrote 2 years ago when I was 11 years old. [Read more…] about The Psycology of Cats

Montgomery of Alamein School in Winchester

June 12, 2014 By Brian Green 23 Comments

© IWM (TR 1035) feature

I was a teacher at the only school in the world called Montgomery of Alamein, in Winchester. Monty himself performed the naming ceremony.

Each year, in the summer term, I would lead a party of 12 year olds over to Normandy so that they might learn at first hand what the invasion involved. [Read more…] about Montgomery of Alamein School in Winchester

How I love Your Comments

June 10, 2014 By Janet Williams 5 Comments

I love your comments in Chandler’s Ford Today. They add value to the posts, form discussions, challenge and debate, expand a topic, and enlighten the readers.

Today I’ll feature some blasts from the past. In our great debate over the spelling of Chandler’s Ford over Chandlers Ford, we had over 30 comments. People argued passionately about the use of the apostrophe, showing their love of our community and their stance [Read more…] about How I love Your Comments

Chandler’s Ford War Memorial Research: Part 2

June 8, 2014 By Margaret Doores 10 Comments

William Henry Kelsey feature

My research on the Chandler’s Ford War Memorial is progressing well. I have found out quite a lot and thought I would share some of this with you all.

My starting point has been a list complied by Martin Edwards (2006) as part of National project by the Royal British Legion to make a record of all war memorials. This list gives full christian names, number, rank, regiment and also information regarding when and where they were killed. [Read more…] about Chandler’s Ford War Memorial Research: Part 2

The Foxglove

June 7, 2014 By Mike Sedgwick 2 Comments

Now is the time of the foxglove. It grows naturally and is therefore regarded by some gardeners as a weed but it is a noble flower. Upright and stately in a royal purple colour it rises above others as a bright symbol in shady places.

Why Foxglove? This strange name for the flower has been around since the 14th century and was sometimes called ‘folksglove’. [Read more…] about The Foxglove

Meeting a Hero

Heroes are rare by their nature. The best ones do not know that they are heroes, they have to be recognised by you.  Anyone proclaiming himself a hero has excluded himself from the class.

During my time at school it was announced that Lieutenant-Commander Peter Twiss had broken the world speed record by 300 mph [Read more…] about Meeting a Hero

Has anyone else living in the Chandler’s Ford area published an ebook or printed copy?

Immigrants

May 29, 2014 By Mike Sedgwick 2 Comments

Israeli Tanks Cross the Suez Canal.

The head of my department at the University took on two foreign students but he did not have the patience to supervise them. He wondered how the young, green lecturer would cope. I came to be supervisor of two Egyptian men ‘of mature years’ as it is quaintly put. That is, older than most students reading for higher degrees.

It took them a while to overcome the culture shock and get their English up to a reasonable standard. [Read more…] about Immigrants

Peculiar British House Numbering System

May 23, 2014 By chippy minton 10 Comments

Kingsway, Chandler's Ford.

Something that visitors to Britain find confusing (apparently) is our system of house numbering. You hear anecdotes such as “I was looking for number 127, so walked down the even side of the street to 126 and crossed over. But the house opposite 126 wasn’t 127 at all. It was 233 – I’d missed 127 half a mile back”.

It’s quite simple really. Buildings are numbered in sequential order, odds on one side and evens  on the other. [Read more…] about Peculiar British House Numbering System

Eastleigh and District Local History Society

Eastleigh Local History Fryern Hill Stores

I met John Lankester a few weeks ago at Hocombe Mead. He told me some exciting projects at the newly revived Eastleigh & District Local History Society.

Many of you know that John and his wife Hazel both are active members of Friends of Hocombe Mead in Chandler’s Ford, where Hazel is the Chairman. Now they are also promoting Eastleigh & District Local History Society, where Hazel is Secretary and John Treasurer. [Read more…] about Eastleigh and District Local History Society

Lisa Clark’s Legacy

May 13, 2014 By Roger Clark 8 Comments

Dr Lisa-Jayne Clark's legacy.

Twenty years ago, our daughter Lisa was studying at Charing Cross Medical School. She once wrote a letter to say that she had just been to an oncology lecture and was very alarmed by the high incidence of women’s cancer and at a relatively low median age.

In the letter, she said she looked around the lecture theatre and wondered who would not be around at the age of 40. Prophetically, and bitterly sad, but [Read more…] about Lisa Clark’s Legacy

Fryern Funtasia 2014: Marie Curie for Betty Heath

May 6, 2014 By Janet Williams 3 Comments

Fryern Funtasia 2014 for Marie Curie.

Betty Heath was 97 years old when she passed away on 29th January 2014.

Yesterday, the younger generations of Betty’s family, who all live in Chandler’s Ford, were raising money for Marie Curie at the Fryern Funtasia in Chandler’s Ford.

Table Hogging

May 4, 2014 By chippy minton 9 Comments

"I'll go and grab a table."

While we were watching the St. George’s Day scout parade in Chandler’s Ford last week, we killed time between the parades by going to the posh-person’s supermarket to do a bit of shopping and have a coffee.

The shopping part of the expedition was successful. We soon found the few items that we needed. Not so the coffee part, however. [Read more…] about Table Hogging
