The Wonderful World of Radio by Allison Symes

March 3, 2017 By Allison Symes 6 Comments

Feature Image - The Wonderful World of Radio - image via Pixabay

I love radio. I rarely watch TV these days. It has to be something special to make me turn the box on and that’s usually a Doctor Who!

(And yes I am sorry Peter Capaldi is going – I’ve liked an older Doctor being in charge of the Tardis. That’s nothing against David Tennant, Matt Smith of Christopher Ecclestone, all of whom were great, but for a Time Lord meant to be over 900 years old, having an older actor playing the role fits). Thornden Community Wind Band Christmas Concert

December 20, 2016 By chippy minton 5 Comments

“It’s beginning  to feel a lot like Christmas” – well, it certainly is for the 380 people who went to “A Swing-Along Christmas” concert presented by the Thornden Community Wind Band with their special guests The Spitfire Sisters on Friday evening. This was a wonderful concert and a fine introduction to the week before Christmas.

Review: Festival of Nine Lessons and Carols at St. Boniface Church 2016

December 18, 2016 By Janet Williams 2 Comments

I attended the Festival of Nine Lessons and Carols in St. Boniface (CofE) Church this evening. The church was packed. Superbly directed by Dr. Hugh Benham, the carol service certainly defines Christmas musically for Chandler’s Ford.

(If you missed the carol service this year, try not to miss it next year. Trust me, you won’t regret it.) [Read more…] about Review: Festival of Nine Lessons and Carols at St. Boniface Church 2016

November 28, 2016 By chippy minton 1 Comment

Members from Eastleigh Operatic and Musical Society singing Christmas carols in Eatsleigh, 2016.

Last week’s autumn production for the Eastleigh Operatic & Musical Society gave us an Extravaganza of Musical Shows – a selection of both some of the better-known and lesser-known numbers from musical theatre.

There is a huge canon of musical shows to choose from, and the company had selected an eclectic programme to showcase the skills of the performers.  [Read more…] about Review: Extravaganza of Musical Shows by Eastleigh Operatic and Musical Society

Review: The Spitfires Band (5th Nov 2016) and My Other Ramblings

November 10, 2016 By Cockhorse 1 Comment

The fame of The Spitfires Band of the 14th Eastleigh Scout and Guides has spread to the East Midlands, where one can say, man to man, “Ey up m’ (my) duck” and not be thought an odd-ball.

So we ventured to the sunny South for a delight of hearing and sight – the music of the band and the expertise of the Corp of Drums. [Read more…] about Review: The Spitfires Band (5th Nov 2016) and My Other Ramblings

Review: The Spitfires: Last Night of the Proms 2016 – the 14th Eastleigh Scout and Guide Band

November 9, 2016 By chippy minton 3 Comments

As expected, The 14th Eastleigh Scout and Guide Band “The Spitfires” gave an outstanding performance at their concert on 5th November. A varied programme included musicals, military marches, and classical pieces – even The Village People’s music got a look in.

The concert included two soloists. The first sang Nessun Dorma – a piece normally heard as a tenor voice, but no way diminished by the soprano (I think it was) at the concert. A wonderful voice, singing the high notes with as much precision and clarity as the lower ones. Review: Thornden Community Wind Band Concert

June 21, 2016 By chippy minton 1 Comment

The Thornden Community Wind Band presented their summer concert, “Round the World in 90 minutes” on Friday 17 June. This was a light-hearted programme of music loosely themed on a trip around the world. Light-hearted doesn’t mean low quality. This was a performance of very high calibre – and great entertainment.

The auditorium was metaphorically became an aeroplane for the concert. The audience were the passengers, the conductor was the pilot, and the band was the engine. We appreciated the range of instruments during the “engine testing” at the start of the concert when a representative from each section played one or two bars of their own choice. Review: The 14th Eastleigh Scout and Guide Band St. George’s Day Concert 2016

April 26, 2016 By chippy minton 2 Comments

The Spitfires 14th Eastleigh Scout and Guide Band "The Spitfires" 2016 St George's Day concert Chandler's Ford Methodist Church.

The 14th Eastleigh Scout and Guide Band (better known as The Spitfires) returned to Chandler’s Ford Methodist Church last weekend for a St George’s Day concert in aid of One Community.

As we have come to expect from a band of such high calibre, the concert showcased the musician’s skills and wide repertoire. We were also treated to a display by the band’s Corps of Drums, who had been busy with other scouting activities at the October concert.
