November 20, 2015 By Hazel Bateman 3 Comments

I spent a fascinating and hugely enjoyable afternoon at Chandler’s Ford library yesterday where I attended a talk on “Growing up in Chandler’s Ford in the 50s and 60s” by local ‘lad’ Martin Napier.

Extra chairs had to be brought out to accommodate everyone. [Read more…] about An Interactive Local History Talk by Martin Napier

November 19, 2015 By Janet Williams 16 Comments

Last month, while waiting for the bus, I noticed a bright yellow object on the outside wall of the Methodist Church.

It contains a piece of life-saving equipment, a defibrillator.

Nigel Moorse, the driving force behind making the defibrillator happen, explains to us in this article the origin of this defibrillator, and how you can benefit from it. [Read more…] about Where are Defibrillators Located in Chandler’s Ford?

November 15, 2015 By Roger Clark 7 Comments

I mentioned a few months ago that Nigel and I would be retiring from running Movies @ the Hilt from the end of this year. The Washing Machine

November 6, 2015 By SO53 News 2 Comments

By Jean-Louis Bravard

Note: This short story is to be read after my previous article, Where is My Tattoo?.

The surgeon who took my tattoo away was delighted with himself when I met him two weeks after the surgery. He had a broad smile and told me convincingly that my cancer was gone. Big smile. Nice to hear about 6 weeks after I was first told, “you have a cancer”. But… this is England and there always is a but. [Read more…] about The Washing Machine

My Memories of Chandler’s Ford in the 1930s and 1940s: Part 2

November 2, 2015 By SO53 News 7 Comments

By Peter David Shuttler

Here I am at the age of 83+ with still vivid memories of my early life at Chandler’s Ford.

I will have to skip for a moment but you will realise the relevance.

While I lived at Woodbridge (Tasmania) our local GP was a Dr Wilson. When mother was out here she went to visit him. Realising that she was originally from Chandler’s Ford he said that he did his internship at Chandler’s Ford. [Read more…] about My Memories of Chandler’s Ford in the 1930s and 1940s: Part 2

The Autumn Pumpkin Festival at the Royal Victoria Country Park

November 1, 2015 By Cecily Casey 3 Comments

Now in its 18th year, the Jubilee Sailing Trust’s family festival event is a wonderful celebration of all things pumpkin related.

The day (10th October 2015) was opened by Eastleigh Mayor Jane Welsh and her husband to the skirling pipes of the Southern Jacobites Pipe Band.

The Jubilee Sailing Trust offers life changing experiences to both disabled and able bodied people aboard their two purpose built tall ships, Tenacious and Lord Nelson. [Read more…] about The Autumn Pumpkin Festival at the Royal Victoria Country Park

Review: Dracula by Chameleon Theatre Company

November 1, 2015 By Janet Williams 2 Comments

What happens when an amateur theatre company needs props that they don’t have?

They ask a friends, ask a neighbour, or ask local residents.

A while ago Nick Coleman and Liz Strevens from the Chameleons Theatre Company went public to borrow a violin (for their production, The Ladykillers), and a white patio table (for their production, Relatively Speaking). [Read more…] about Review: Dracula by Chameleon Theatre Company

October 29, 2015 By SO53 News 1 Comment

By Peter David Shuttler

I was born in Chandler’s Ford in 1932 – lived at Kingsmead (corner of Winchester Road and Ford Road) until 1946.

I tried to contact Barbara Hillier some years ago as I have two copies of her book. I sat next to David (Ginger) Hillier in Miss Drover’s Grade 4/5 in 1945/46. [Read more…] about My Memories of Chandler’s Ford in the 1930s and 1940s: Part 1

Chandler’s Ford Slum Survivors

October 25, 2015 By Churches Together in Chandler's Ford 1 Comment

By Paul Smith

Over 1 billion people live in extreme poverty every day. Whether that be in a slum, mud hut or on the streets, it is a situation we are not exposed to or have imminent threat of in our society. But in the scriptures God calls us as a church to continually love, serve and help the poor.

As a youth group we have been involved with Friends of St Anne’s Liuli Hospital in Tanzania, helping [Read more…] about Chandler’s Ford Slum Survivors
