Updates to the Highway Code

January 28, 2022 By chippy minton 2 Comments

highway code updates

The latest version of The Highway Code is being published tomorrow (29 January).  There are (depending on which report you read), 8 new rules and 49 updated rules – but some of these updates are to clarify wording and/or where one underlying principle affects more than one rule.

highway code updates

Of course, much of the Highway Code is a guide rather than prescriptive.  However, to paraphrase the opening paragraph of the first Highway Code: “although breaking any of these rules is not in itself an offence, it will make it so hot for you that you won’t know the difference.” [Read more…] about Updates to the Highway Code

Youth Hostelling then and now – part 2

September 11, 2021 By chippy minton 2 Comments

the new YHA logo – updated, but still the friendly green triangle. (Picture credit: underclasscameraman via Flickr.com)

Remembering the fun I had had when staying in youth hostels in my younger days, I decided to introduce hostelling to my family.

We started with a couple of weekend trips, to Snowdonia and London respectively.  And then for this year’s summer holiday – having found all usual self-catering facilities either fully-booked or astronomically expensive – I booked a six-bed room in a youth hotel at Hawes in the Yorkshire Dales.  This cost around £600 for the week (that was with a 10% member discount, and a further 5% discount for including someone under the age of 26 in the party).  Now, where can you get views like this for that price?  A hotel up the road was charging as much per night!

Youth Hostelling then and now – part 1

September 8, 2021 By chippy minton 6 Comments

The original green triangle logo of the YHA. (picture credit: cuthbert25 via Flickr.com)

Many years ago, at the tender age of 12 or 13, my friend and I stood outside a youth hostel, slightly confused by the notice that said it didn’t open until 7.  We’d thought it opened at 5.  Soon the warden came outside to welcome us: “you don’t have to wait out here, boys, come on in”.  We’d made the schoolboy error (well, we were schoolboys) of reading “1700 hrs” as “7.00 pm”!

This was our first trip to a youth hostel.  We’d cycled, well, nearly twenty miles, to Greens Norton and this was a taster to see whether we could cope with a longer trip in the summer. [Read more…] about Youth Hostelling then and now – part 1

Growing up in Chandler’s Ford: 1950s – 1960s: Rotrax Memories; Joy of Powerboat – Part 14

Another episode from Boats and Bikes…

Cycle Time Trials – the 1970s

I found the competitive side of cycling to be just what I wanted at that time. I needed a new angle on cycling and this was it! I managed to be moderately successful and I improved my “Personal Best” times over the distances I raced – mainly 10, 25 & 50 mile events. It is worth saying how different commentating on powerboat racing was then to how it is nowadays.

As the boat [competitor] of a personality raced past, the commentator would show a degree of deference. [Read more…] about Growing up in Chandler’s Ford: 1950s – 1960s: the Joy of Powerboat Race and Cycling (Part 12)

Why Don’t Cyclists Use Cycle Lanes?

February 27, 2016 By chippy minton 11 Comments

“Is there anyone out there who can give me a good reason why a lot … not all … of cyclists ride on the road when there is a perfectly good, and expensively made cycle way nearby?

For example, Castle Lane from Chandler’s Ford to Baddesley, Baddesley to Rownhams, Bishopstoke to Eastleigh?”

So asks a recent post on Streetlife, a popular local Social Media site. [Read more…] about Why Don’t Cyclists Use Cycle Lanes?

Growing up in Chandler’s Ford: 1950s – 1960s: Witnessing My First Powerboat Race (Part 11)

February 19, 2016 By Martin Napier 1 Comment

growing up in Chandler's Ford Martin Napier

As 1963 started, I found myself more embroiled in preparations for the crucial exams in the spring.

My real energies were directed towards bikes and boats though!

I was never a very keen scholar, and spent far more time studying boats in magazines, than I did revising!

I knew I was poor at maths and physics, so effectively gave up on those subjects, and concentrated on English, History and Geography, where I knew I had hopes of positive results. [Read more…] about Growing up in Chandler’s Ford: 1950s – 1960s: Witnessing My First Powerboat Race (Part 11)

I returned to the weekly “Club Room” meets throughout the Autumn & winter of 1961/2, with The Cyclists Touring Club. Their Southampton Section, as it was titled, organised weekly Sunday club-runs (rides), to a variety of destinations, always with afternoon tea booked at a venue.

These venues varied in type, from pubs that provided simple bread, cake and tea, meals, to the few cafes, or even a couple of farmhouses! [Read more…] about Growing up in Chandler’s Ford: 1950s – 1960s: Bikes, Boats, and Adventures (Part 10)

Growing up in Chandler’s Ford: 1950s – 1960s: My Passions with Bikes and Boats (Part 9)

February 10, 2016 By Martin Napier 1 Comment

growing up in Chandler's Ford Martin Napier

I think that my ‘awareness’ of motor boats probably came from the early days of our little family moving from London to Chandler’s Ford.

Dad used to take us to Southampton, on a Saturday afternoon, and would see motor launches on Southampton Water from the Royal Pier, and also from my favoured ‘window seat’ of Mayes’ restaurant, where we often enjoyed afternoon tea, looking out across the Pirelli factory towards the “New Docks”. Growing up in Chandler’s Ford: 1950s – 1960s: A Summer of Hope and Sorrow (Part 6)

July 20, 2015 By Martin Napier 4 Comments

growing up in Chandler's Ford Martin Napier

I remain a club cyclist to this day, having ventured into competitive cycling in the 1970s. I won a few trophies with the Sotonia Cycling Club of which I am a Vice-President.

I remain involved in riding, timekeeping races, and enjoy the companionship and camaraderie the sport offers those of all ages. Some of my present day clubmates are over 80 years of age, and are still active, so there must be some benefits to cycling! Growing up in Chandler’s Ford: 1950s – 1960s: Bicycle, Bicycle! (Part 5)

July 13, 2015 By Martin Napier 10 Comments

growing up in Chandler's Ford Martin Napier

Herewith another saga……

While I was attending North End Secondary School, I became interested in cycling, not just as a means of transport, but as a sport and pastime.

I was pretty useless at conventional sports like football and cricket, so a chance discussion with another paper boy, introduced me to the Southampton group of the Cyclists’ Touring Club (CTC). This was and still is, a National & International club, with local “Sections” based around the country. [Read more…] about Growing up in Chandler’s Ford: 1950s – 1960s: Bicycle, Bicycle! (Part 5)

Cycling: Eastleigh – Chandler’s Ford

March 31, 2014 By chippy minton 5 Comments

We took this cycle route from Eastleigh to Chandler’s Ford last Saturday.

From the centre of Eastleigh, cycle through the Pirelli Estate. Head for Tommy Green Walk, this brings you out onto Dew Lane. Cycle along Dew Lane a short way, then cut into the newest bit of the development (Tinning Road?)* to take you to Passfield Avenue, opposite the leisure centre (Fleming Park). Be Safe: The Story Of Fred And Jim

February 22, 2014 By Ben Williams 7 Comments

Note: The writer of this post is 13 years old.

Today’s post isn’t going to be a coherent one, but – as you guessed, a rant. But it’s a rant I’m sure everyone can agree with, especially drivers.

As I can’t drive, I don’t know many problems about driving and silly motorists, [Read more…] about Be Safe: The Story Of Fred And Jim
