101 Things to Put into Room 101

February 23, 2018 By Allison Symes 17 Comments

Feature Image - Part 1 of Room 101 series - Image via Pixabay

George Orwell (aka Eric Blair) has contributed so much to literature and has an accolade few other writers have (though whether he would welcome it is another thing). While it is not unknown for writers to have their sayings go into popular culture over centuries (think Shakespeare especially), how many have their phrases go on to become the titles for TV programmes? Orwell achieves that with Big Brother and Room 101. [Read more…] about 101 Things to Put into Room 101

Advice to My 20 Year Old Self – Allison Symes

April 21, 2017 By Allison Symes 8 Comments

Feature Image Advice to 20 Year old self

One writing exercise that came out of my trip to Swanwick Writers’ Summer School last year was to write to my 20-year-old self with advice based on knowing now what I didn’t know back then. This was fun, really made me think and I thought at the time this could make a good CFT post because I can throw it open for you to join in. What would you tell your 20-year-old self? I am only talking in general terms for this but my list is below. [Read more…] about Advice to My 20 Year Old Self – Allison Symes

February 26, 2017 By Janet Williams 5 Comments

In October 2015, I wrote this article 1 hour? 3 hours? Parking Rules at Co-operative Food and Fryern Arcade in Chandler’s Ford.

Today I’m going to talk about parking in Hiltingbury.

We visited the bakery in Hiltingbury on Hiltingbury Road two days ago and saw these signs: [Read more…] about Parking in Hiltingbury

Books of 2016; Ebook Surgeries at Chandler’s Ford Library

November 18, 2016 By Allison Symes 1 Comment

Feature Image - Chandler's Ford Library Events - November 2016

I am really pleased to bring news of two events happening at Chandler’s Ford Library this month. I’m pleased because the events themselves sound fun. I loved the recent link up between Chandler’s Ford Library and Merdon School for the Story Shuffle Project and the following two events are also excellent ideas.

I hope all who can go to these events have a wonderful time at them. [Read more…] about Books of 2016; Ebook Surgeries at Chandler’s Ford Library

Why Don’t Cyclists Use Cycle Lanes?

February 27, 2016 By chippy minton 11 Comments

“Is there anyone out there who can give me a good reason why a lot … not all … of cyclists ride on the road when there is a perfectly good, and expensively made cycle way nearby?

For example, Castle Lane from Chandler’s Ford to Baddesley, Baddesley to Rownhams, Bishopstoke to Eastleigh?”

So asks a recent post on Streetlife, a popular local Social Media site. [Read more…] about Why Don’t Cyclists Use Cycle Lanes?

The Good and the Bad of Fryern Arcade

The good and the bad of the Fryern Arcade Chandler's Ford by Mike Sedgwick

People blog about, talk about, write about and visit Fryern Arcade in Chandler’s Ford so there must be something good about it.

Shortly after Fryern was opened in 1967, Ian Nairn, an architectural journalist wrote in the Observer (October 8th 1967) about Fryern and compared it with a similar development, the Fairwater Centre, in Cwmbran, South Wales. [Read more…] about The Good and the Bad of Fryern Arcade

How Many of the Ten Commandments Do You Know?

March 11, 2015 By chippy minton 6 Comments

Let’s have a look at the Bible during Lent.

How many of the Ten Commandments do you know?

Most people can probably remember that there’s one about graven images, one about killing (actually it’s murder, but that’s a whole different argument) and coveting (because the first time they heard it they had to rush for a dictionary to find out what “covet” meant”).

Here they are: [Read more…] about How Many of the Ten Commandments Do You Know?

Bye-Bye Ridge Rider: Much Needed TLC for Fryern Recreation Ground

March 8, 2015 By Nicky Head 1 Comment

Fryern recreation ground Chandler's Ford: bye-bye Ridge Rider.

Fryern Park has been my park since I was seven years old, and since my school was next door (Fryern School), I pretty much dragged my Mum there every day.

During the holidays it was used even more, and as I became older my friends and I would choose to meet up and sit on the grass hill and chat, sometimes for hours!

My favourite piece of play equipment [Read more…] about Bye-Bye Ridge Rider: Much Needed TLC for Fryern Recreation Ground

What Has Happened to Oakmount Road?

March 3, 2015 By chippy minton 11 Comments

What has happened to Oakmount Road Chandler's Ford?

What has happened to Oakmount Road in Chandler’s Ford? It was closed for a week recently while a number of random strips of tarmac have been pasted in the roadway.

In some places they look quite reasonable – uniform straight lines, joined at right-angles: [Read more…] about What Has Happened to Oakmount Road?
