I am delighted to see WH Smith at the Fryern Arcade in Chandler’s Ford has started selling books.
Yesterday afternoon I saw a good selection of books at WH Smith. One book relevant to Chandler’s Ford is The Chandler’s Ford Story: From Earliest Times to the 21st Century, by Barbara Hillier and Gerald Ponting.
Surprisingly this edition sold at WH Smith is inexpensive: only £5.99. Amazon sells the same book for £9.82 at present.
New Eastleigh Football Club book: The more we win the better it will be
I met a smart young man called Joshua Hoey when browsing books at WH Smith. Joshua is a talented footballer – striker (Under 13) for Eastleigh Junior Football Club.
In the Eastleigh Juniors FC website, Josh is described as “a very versatile player who can play on the R, L of midfield or in attack. Josh is very quick with two very good feet.”
Josh was visiting his mum, Rachel Smith, who is the supervisor of the WH Smith store.
Rachel showed me a new book The More We Win, The Better It Will Be by Paul McNamara, about the writer’s behind-the-scenes glimpse of Eastleigh Football Club.
This new book is extremely special for Josh, and it contains many Eastleigh FC pictures taken by his grandfather, photographer Tony Smith.
Tony Smith once wrote an article for Chandler’s Ford Today: Eastleigh FC: Football, Family And Photography.
The More We Win, The Better It Will Be by Paul McNamara
Eastleigh Football Club is an ambitious semi-professional club that in 2013/2014 competed in the Football Conference South.
Ten years earlier, they were a much smaller club, playing in their local regional league.
Progress from that lowly status saw the team spend the 2013/2014 campaign challenging for the Conference South league title and promotion into the Conference Premier Division.
This is the story of Eastleigh’s momentous 2013/14 season. The book provides a compelling insight into the day to day life of the club, on and off the pitch. It recounts the events of the season as experienced by all those involved.
This is a limited edition first book from Paul McNamara.
This book costs £13.99.
You can buy the book from WH Smith and Eastleigh Museum.

Fiction, non-fiction and children’s picture books
At WH Smith, there are also some fiction and non-fiction books, and also picture books for children. For a limited space that the shop has for books, the selection is quite good.
Some books are Selnews Bargain Books. For example, The Bumper Book of Nature was £12.99, now “Our Price” is £5.99.
Book selling is incredibly important especially for Chandler’s Ford residents who are unable to travel to other towns or cities, or who do not shop online. We need to meet the needs of these neighbours.
I hope WH Smith in Chandler’s Ford could continue to improve its book supply, to do its best to sell a wider variety of high quality books, to meet the needs of the locals. As we no longer have a bookshop in Chandler’s Ford, the role that WH Smith plays in book supply at the Centre Of Chandler’s Ford will be significant.
Note: WH Smith in Chandler’s Ford opens from Monday to Saturday from 8am to 6pm. Shop closes on Sunday.
