Bishop’s Waltham Butchers will come to the Fryern Arcade in Chandler’s Ford soon.
But when? Well, the post office has to move over to the other side first, before the butcher Andrew Grover could occupy the post office’s current space next to D & G Hardware.
The problem is there has been a delay with the move of the post office in the Fryern Arcade. See the notices:
Old Notice: The post office will move on the 28th of May 2014.
New Notice: The post office will move on the 28th of June 2014.
Toby Roberts, owner of D & G Hardware, told me about the news of the arrival of Bishop’s Waltham Butchers yesterday. Toby and Andy know each other as D & G Hardware and Bishop’s Waltham Butchers both run their businesses at Locks Heath Shopping Centre.
Talking about the Fryern Arcade post office, I’m always perplexed by the two large post boxes at the Fryern Arcade near the traffic lights to The Mall Shopping Centre.
I remember I had seen two post boxes side-by-side before, perhaps in London, but I don’t think two identical post boxes side-by-side is a common sight. Am I wrong? Have you seen any post box + companion apart from this pair? Perhaps one post box would just be a bit too lonely? One for sorrow; two for joy?
I also showed you some of the modern British stamps I’ve collected in the past 10 years in my Nostalgia: My Stamp Collection post. My son was not happy as his Doctor Who stamps were not featured there. I promised him I would add the Doctors. My son also writes on Chandler’s Ford Today, and it is only fair that I connect with him through the Doctors.

Great news about the butcher coming! Although I buy most of my meat from Farmers Choice because it is free range, it is so useful to have a friendly local butcher to rely on between orders or when I have run out of something. I avoid most supermarket meat because the animals are often not reared to the highest welfare standards and the farmers are not paid enough for producing this meat, all in the cause of keeping prices down. I have taken the decision to eat meat less often so that I can afford to pay a little more for fairly and humanely produced meat.

You have made a great decision – eat less and eat well. It’s such a great discipline and I’ll try to do the same.
If more people are like you, there will be more healthy people around us. I’ve heard of many strange diets around – people try to lose weight magically – apparently without losing weight it is not worth living, according to some adverts. If people learn to be sensible of what they eat, eat well, and do a bit of exercise, they don’t have to go to extremes. They can eat happily.
I’ve recently received a lot of leaflets about ‘slimming’ in Chandler’s Ford, and the slimming banners are all around the churches too. It makes me wonder what has really occupied people’s minds.

When I was over 12 stone some years ago I went to one of these slimming clubs. I was told that I would only lose weight if it was the most important thing in my life. When I get to the pearly gates, I doubt if St Peter will ask me,”why didn’t you lose two stone?”!!! However, I did get down to 9 stone 6 pounds and have stayed around this weight ever since without too much effort. Losing weight has certainly never been the most important thing in my life. I would be ashamed if it was!
