“We’re Sorry To Be Leaving Fryern…But…”

May 1, 2013 By Janet Williams 11 Comments

I picked up this notice last weekend at the post office in Fryern Arcade, Chandler’s Ford.

It’s a simple message from the Fryern Dry Cleaners, but you can still feel a tinge of sadness:

“Our lease expires at end of March, and we are leaving by Friday 5th April. If you’re unable to collect your order before then, it can be collected from……”

At Fryern Arcade, so many familiar faces and shops have gone. You won’t forget Jonathan from The Arcade Bookshop, will you?

With Fryern Dry Cleaners, Karen had been with the shop for more than 25 years.

The shops in our memories also include Raffo’s hair salon (with Debbie Raffo) and Southern Jewellers (with Christine and Ann Wren).

Yes, the Mialls have retired after about 24 years in business there and could not find anyone else to take on the lease. The Amazon effect, I think, plus a rise in the rent and rates. A real shame – I have bought books there for years, but they deserve a good retirement now. They go to a C of E church in St Cross, Winchester (the tradional one, not Christ Church).

Yes — apart from books, I used to buy many lovely cards from the Arcade Bookshop. I really love their choice of books — always different from what you’d get from Waterstones. The last book I bought there was The Chronicles of Downton Abbey.

Does any one remember Norman the white haired old butcher who worked for Richard Duke?

What a great guy he was 🙂
