Humorous Little Memory: Montgomery Of Alamein School

November 19, 2014 By Janet Williams 11 Comments

Brian Green recalls Montgomery of Alamein School in Winchester.

On the first of July 1968, Field Marshal Bernard Montgomery visited Winchester and renamed Winchester County Secondary School for boys to Montgomery of Alamein School.

It was a significant event as it was the only Montgomery of Alamein school in the world.

Brian Green from Chandler’s Ford was a teacher at the school and witnessed the historical event. [Read more…] about Humorous Little Memory: Montgomery Of Alamein School

Discover Montgomery Of Alamein School In Winchester

November 18, 2014 By Janet Williams 6 Comments

Yesterday I published an important historical research by Michael Burford, a former pupil of Montgomery Of Alamein School in Winchester.

When Michael Burford contacted me last week about his old school, and later told me that he has a collection of the school’s pictures and history, I knew that I have ‘struck gold’. [Read more…] about Discover Montgomery Of Alamein School In Winchester

Montgomery of Alamein School in Winchester

I was a teacher at the only school in the world called Montgomery of Alamein, in Winchester. Monty himself performed the naming ceremony.

Each year, in the summer term, I would lead a party of 12 year olds over to Normandy so that they might learn at first hand what the invasion involved. [Read more…] about Montgomery of Alamein School in Winchester

The Foxglove

June 7, 2014 By Mike Sedgwick 2 Comments

Now is the time of the foxglove. It grows naturally and is therefore regarded by some gardeners as a weed but it is a noble flower. Upright and stately in a royal purple colour it rises above others as a bright symbol in shady places.

Why Foxglove? This strange name for the flower has been around since the 14th century and was sometimes called ‘folksglove’. [Read more…] about The Foxglove

Swans and Cygnets on the River Itchen

May 21, 2014 By Roger Clark 3 Comments

Swan and cygnets

While waiting for a Planetarium show at the Winchester Science Centre with our grand-daughter, we decided to kill some time along the River Itchen.

We parked nearby the river at Itchen Stoke and were hoping to find some ducks for Lucy to feed with the remains of her packed lunch.

As it was, there were no ducks around and so [Read more…] about Swans and Cygnets on the River Itchen

My Turning Point: Why Communication Matters

April 21, 2014 By Janet Williams 10 Comments

We all have turning points in our life: the first kiss, marriage, having kids, divorce, or, coming out ……

Two weeks ago my son was officially discharged from Southampton General Hospital by his oncologist, Dr Ramya Ramanujachar, after a 10-year follow-up as an outpatient.

My son is only 13. His illness 12 years ago was undoubtedly a turning point in my life. [Read more…] about My Turning Point: Why Communication Matters

The Three Kinds of Whovians

April 12, 2014 By Ben Williams 4 Comments

What kind of Whovian are you?

I was in Winchester today with my mum and I noticed several signs advertising a Doctor Who event.

When mum asked if I wanted to go, I said no. This puzzled her, as she thought as a fan, I would want to go. I then explained to her what I call the three kinds of Whovians: [Read more…] about The Three Kinds of Whovians

If Your Life Feels Kind Of Empty

March 1, 2014 By Sally Owens 7 Comments

Winchester Cathedral Feature

If your life feels kind of empty,
And you are looking for good cheer,
Pick yourself up, dust yourself down,
And become a volunteer.

I was severely head injured at 19 years old. My life and my dreams were shattered but my faith was strengthened. [Read more…] about If Your Life Feels Kind Of Empty

People I Want To Meet

February 28, 2014 By Ben Williams 9 Comments

Isn’t meeting someone you’ve always wanted to meet just so cool? Not just celebrities, but people from the past or fictional characters like Batman? Imagine how cool it would be to meet Batman!

But today, I’m going to be talking about people who I’ve always wanted to meet. And luckily, I’ve met a few! OK, only two. Technically three. [Read more…] about People I Want To Meet

Selling Glider

February 23, 2014 By Mike Sedgwick 5 Comments

Last week I sold my beautiful glider and feel sad about it. Now I have to find another one. Gliders are owned by syndicates of 2-12 people to share the expense. There are 3 of us and we decided we would like a dual seater rather than this single seat Ventus 2cT. We are currently negotiating for one.

It is not like selling a second hand car because there are no defects that can be hidden. [Read more…] about Selling Glider

Auspicious Lions in Southampton: Chinese New Year 2014

February 2, 2014 By Janet Williams 9 Comments

A friend commented that I posted too many posts on this website as he was struggling to catch up. But he added yesterday, “However I am sure we all want to hear about the Lion Dance tomorrow.”

Why was my friend contradicting himself?

Well, today’s Lion Dance in Southampton was full of surprises. [Read more…] about Auspicious Lions in Southampton: Chinese New Year 2014

Charming Winchester Cathedral Christmas Market

December 21, 2013 By Janet Williams 5 Comments

We visited the Winchester Cathedral Christmas Market last weekend.

The market, though enchanting, was very crowded. It was not surprising, as the market attracts more than 350,000 visitors each year, for such a small and unique historic city. [Read more…] about Charming Winchester Cathedral Christmas Market
