Winchester Photographic Society: Spring Lecture By Martin Parr

January 27, 2014 By Roger Clark 1 Comment

Each Spring the Winchester Photographic Society (WPS) invites a photographer, of international distinction and standing, to deliver a lecture at the Winchester Discovery Centre.

We are delighted to announce that Magnum photographer, Martin Parr, who has been described as a “chronicler of our age”, is to present the 2014 Spring lecture in March.

The humour in the Magnum photographer’s images makes us laugh at ourselves, with a sense of recognition and release.

An eminent German photographer, Thomas Weski, aptly describes the work of Martin Parr:

“Leisure, consumption and communication are the concepts that this British photographer has been researching for several decades now on his worldwide travels. In the process, he examines national characteristics and international phenomena to find out how valid they are as symbols that will help future generations to understand our cultural peculiarities. Parr enables us to see things that have seemed familiar to us in a completely new way. In this way he creates his own image of society, which allows us to combine an analysis of the visible signs of globalisation with unusual visual experiences. In his photos, Parr juxtaposes specific images with universal ones without resolving the contradictions. Individual characteristics are accepted and eccentricities are treasured.”

What is a Magnum photographer?

Magnum is one of the first photographic cooperatives, owned and administered entirely by members. Magnum’s photographers meet once a year, during the last weekend in June, in New York, Paris or London, to discuss the cooperative’s business. One day of the meeting is reserved to review potential new members’ portfolios and vote on admitting individuals. An approved applicant is invited to become a ‘Nominee Member’ of Magnum, a category of membership that provides a chance for members and the individual to get to know each other, but that includes no binding commitments on either side.

Winchester Photographic Society (WPS)

WPS is one of South’s most popular and friendly photographic societies and one of the oldest, having been formed in 1923. It caters for all levels of members from novice to experienced. We meet every Tuesday at 7:30pm from September through May. Our programme includes talks, workshops, and competitions involving all genres of photography. That is not all, there are active subsections for Audio Visual (A/V)and Panel Groups. Also often at Littleton Village Hall we schedule workshops on various aspects of photography such as portraits, flash, print mounting, post-processing etc. The highlight of the year is our Exhibition for members and open classes.

New members are made welcome. For further information contact Winchester Photographic Society Home Page or call me on 02380 253600.

(Note: Roger Clark is the WPS Publicity Officer.)

About Roger Clark

Another Chandler's Ford ex-IBMer who is just learning to say NO to volunteer opportunities. Enjoyed flying and sailing after retirement but now golf and wildlife photography in the ascendancy. I do feel responsible for putting something back into the Community or organisations that I have enjoyed. Hence I have an active interest in the Hiltingbury Community Organisation and the Hilt, Winchester Photographic Society, South Winchester Golf Club, Festival Medical Services, and a charity called Ovacome.
