Generosity: Chandler’s Ford Neighbours Support Eastleigh Basics Bank

February 19, 2015 By Janet Williams 1 Comment

Two days ago, on our way to Chandler’s Ford Train Station in the morning, my son and I saw Hazel Bateman outside St. Boniface Church, loading lots of things into the boot of her car.

That was a precious moment, so I snapped a few pictures.

Hazel was collecting and delivering food and household products donated by Chandler’s Ford residents to Eastleigh Basics Bank (EBB).

Champions of Eastleigh Basics Bank

Every church that supports EBB appoints a ‘champion’ who liaises with the Basics Bank, communicates with church members regarding the goods that are currently required, and takes the donations to the Bank on a regular basis.

Hazel Bateman is the ‘champion’ for St. Boniface and St. Martin in the Wood Church, Chandler’s Ford.

Hazel and Sue Caukwell collect the items donated from both churches and take them to the Bank for sorting and distribution to people who have been referred from outside agencies.

Hazel told me that a number of churches have promised to cover the rent of the premises for five years, in addition to making cash donations from time to time.

The Bank is also well supported by schools at harvest time, and by other community groups and local businesses.

Plan for improving Eastleigh Basics Bank

Now that a five-year lease on the premises has been signed and charitable status obtained, the Eastleigh Basics Bank management committee hope to improve the storage/sorting area and the area where the shoppers enjoy refreshments while waiting for their bags to be made up.
