What Can You Do To Support Eastleigh Basics Bank?

November 23, 2013 By Janet Williams 16 Comments

The Eastleigh Basics Bank is a brilliant organisation. It gives practical support to individuals and families in financial crisis.

Eastleigh Town Centre today has been turned into a scene of carnival.

In the morning, I saw Dave Keating, the shop manager of Eastleigh Basics Bank, being very busy in the street. He was talking to people and encouraging them to support Eastleigh Basics Bank.

An Eastleigh Basics Bank trolley was also slowly filled up with food donated by the public.

What’s the work of Eastleigh Basics Bank?

“Latest figures show we have now supplied 5000 people with a 5 day supply of food in 2.5 years of serving our community. We are currently feeding on average (and have been for several months now) 120 people a week. Not normally one to do the maths for you but if it continues at this rate that’s another 6000 people by this time next year!”

How can you help?

Eastleigh Basics Bank need your support in three ways:
1. Food donations ASAP
2. Get your club/business/school/church to do a collection. We are more than happy to help in anyway we can to make it happen. Contact Dan Brain for marketing materials/ ideas.
3. Spread the word about the work of the EBB.
4. Becoming a volunteer.

Eastleigh Lions (we cover the northern half of the Borough) are supporting the Eastleigh Basics Bank through regular food donations at our monthly meetings. Next meeting is Friday 4th April at 8.00 at Holiday Inn Eastleigh…..bring along a tin!
We also hope to be making a donation at the end of our President’s year in office (May / June), and have just run the Tesco Winnall collection for Marie Curie Cancer Care.
Apart from community help (it is our 50th year this year) and raising money for worthy causes, we have an active social side.

Thank you Dave for these events. I’ll add them to the event calendar. Ray Fishman writes about his work for Marie Curie Cancer Care in Chandler’s Ford and Eastleigh on this site.

I think the idea of the Basic bank is very helpful, and fills the gap many people are now finding selves in. But I worry that such a scheme is helping the government absolve itself of its responsibility, and results in the rich getting richer and poor getting poorer.

We raised over £400 from our Go Kart Challenge, so thanks to all who took part.

Quiz night on Wednesday 26th March, Barn Dance on 3rd May and in between we will be re-cycling over 10,000 spectacles through our friends at Petersfield and Chichester Lions Clubs. These will eventually be used in developing countries.

Thank you Dave. Do send me event details (texts and images) and I’ll advertise them on this website, so that more people will learn about them and support your good work. Thank you.
