Butterflies in February

February 26, 2015 By Mike Sedgwick Leave a Comment

Butterflies in RHS Mike Sedgwick

Butterflies in February? Poor things will be caught in the next frost. But not if they are in a hothouse.

For the next week or so there is a magnificent display of butterflies in the Glasshouse at the Royal Horticultural Society’s gardens at Wisley.

What Has Chandler’s Ford Done for Me?

February 20, 2015 By Allison Symes 13 Comments

What has Chandler's Ford done for me by Allison Symes

How many lives do you have? One? Two (the one at work, the one at home for example)? Three (work, home, involvement in amateur dramatics or the church, say)?

I have had multiple lives in Chandler’s Ford but will focus on two: before becoming a dog owner and since then and before becoming a writer and since. Chandler’s Ford has influenced both. [Read more…] about What Has Chandler’s Ford Done for Me?

Days Out: Blashford Lakes

February 8, 2015 By chippy minton 5 Comments

Blashford Lakes New Forest review chippy minton

For my latest suggestion of places to go for a day out I’m going to turn to what I call the New Forest’s best kept secret – mainly because I’d never heard of it until a couple of years ago.

Blashford Lakes, near Ringwood, is a set of former gravel quarries that have been flooded and turned into a nature reserve. It is run by the Hampshire and Isle of Wight Wildlife Trust. [Read more…] about Days Out: Blashford Lakes

Chandler’s Ford Guide Book Entry

January 3, 2015 By Mike Sedgwick 14 Comments

Chandler’s Ford is like a well-engineered machine. It works smoothly, runs well and does not break down.

It is serviced thoroughly by Eastleigh Borough Council; traffic flows are fluid and it has good bus services and a railway station.

The shops here are more than adequate with three supermarkets (Co-operative Food, Asda, and Waitrose), [Read more…] about Chandler’s Ford Guide Book Entry

The Voice And A Raven

December 28, 2014 By Mike Sedgwick 3 Comments

The most difficult job in television must be producing an advert that people will watch.

When the adverts come on, most people get up to make a cup of tea or visit the loo or maybe start to argue about what to watch next.

There have been some notable adverts worth watching. The first UK commercial TV advert was for SR toothpaste [Read more…] about The Voice And A Raven

Land Off Castle Lane – North Baddesley – Proposed Housing Development

December 11, 2014 By Nick John 7 Comments

Taylor Wimpey proposed to build 300 homes at Great Covert, off Castle Lane, North Baddesley.

I was fortunate in meeting with my local Councillor recently (Valley Park ward, Test Valley Borough Council) and in the conversation we touched upon the thorny subject of housing development.

Apparently, there is a proposed new development up in front of the planning committee currently which effectively tacks on around 300 homes to the edge of the Knightwood Park development as it borders Castle Lane – [Read more…] about Land Off Castle Lane – North Baddesley – Proposed Housing Development

Log Fires

December 10, 2014 By Mike Sedgwick Leave a Comment

You must have lit fires when you were young and out in the country.

It’s frowned upon by adults but you have to do these things to learn.

The first lesson is that wet things do not burn. The second is that there is nothing as satisfying as something cooked on your own log fire. [Read more…] about Log Fires

Neighbourhood Killer And Child

September 20, 2014 By Roger Clark Leave a Comment

Neighbourhood killer feature

Off Vancouver Island last Monday, we saw a Killer Whale with baby. It went on to take a seal – this type of Orca is a mammal (rather than fish) eating one. Baby seals and dolphins are its main food.

Oddly enough an adult seal on seeing an Orca will take to land. Baby seals [Read more…] about Neighbourhood Killer And Child

New Arrival

September 15, 2014 By Mike Sedgwick 2 Comments

The rambling rose and Russian vine had made a great thicket on our pagoda so I got out the electric trimmer. Branches fell away and the jumble of twigs was beginning to take a reasonable shape.

The blades skimmed through another mass of branches and left a pigeon on view eyeing me angrily. It shuffled and flew off leaving two eggs in a primitive nest. [Read more…] about New Arrival

Ancient Vedda Tribe Becoming Extinct

September 6, 2014 By Mike Sedgwick 7 Comments

In 543 BC a group of sailors, traders, adventures and probably an assortment of ruffians arrived in Sri Lanka after sailing down the east coast of India from the region of Kolkata. They established a kingdom in Anuradhapura, which lasted 1400 years. [Read more…] about Ancient Vedda Tribe Becoming Extinct

Chandler’s Ford Hocombe Mead Vandalism

September 6, 2014 By Janet Williams 2 Comments

Burnt owl sculpture at Hocombe Mead, Chandler's Ford.

This morning, my son and I visited Hocombe Mead to check on the vandalised carved oak tree.

On Streetlife.com, I learned that some vandals had set fire to the tree stump containing the beautifully carved owl in our local beautiful nature reserve.

Delightful Family Fun Day In Eastleigh Town Centre

August 15, 2014 By Janet Williams 8 Comments

Alpaca Eastleigh feature

My son and I took the train to Eastleigh this afternoon. We were totally surprised by many farm animals welcoming us in the town centre.

It was actually Eastleigh Fun Day today, which I wasn’t aware of. What a wonderful surprise!

Emma Thompson from Emma’s Farm, of Swanmore, brought her donkey, pony, alpacas, sheep, chickens, [Read more…] about Delightful Family Fun Day In Eastleigh Town Centre

Life On The Road

July 23, 2014 By Mike Sedgwick 3 Comments

Sri Lankan girl at workshop

Anuradhapura is about 100 miles from Kandy. On our travels, Bernard, our driver, advised us that we passed through the best area in Sri Lanka for mango.

He sampled a few before advising us which to buy at 12p each. The farmers are keen to sell at the roadside stalls. If they sell wholesale they get only 2.5p each. Six weeks later the season was almost over and the price was 25p each. Never mind, they are still very good. [Read more…] about Life On The Road

Kandy Lake vs Chandler’s Ford Lakes

June 25, 2014 By Mike Sedgwick 4 Comments

Bathing House Kandy Lake feature

Sunday morning in Kandy, Sri Lanka, time to walk out around the lake looking smart, long trousers of course; only tourists wear shorts. On an energetic day we walk to town but this means braving ‘The Tunnel’.

The tunnel is dark, damp and has deep drainage channels on both sides. Water drips from the roof and there is barely room for pedestrians and cars. [Read more…] about Kandy Lake vs Chandler’s Ford Lakes
