Short Walk By Itchen

February 19, 2014 By Mike Sedgwick 17 Comments

Had a short walk by the Itchen today. Joined it behind the Travelodge on Twyford Road and walked downstream to Withymead Lock where a fallen tree blocks the path and the path itself disappears beneath the water.

Upstream as far as a railway bridge near Highbridge Road.

There a spillway is proving inadequate and water crosses the towpath. Passable in wellies but only had boots.

Who am I?

  • I came to Southampton University on the day England won the World Cup, 1966.
  • I worked in the University and Southampton General Hospital and became Professor in Clinical Neurophysiology (Brain waves, epilepsy and stuff).
  • I moved to Chandler’s Ford in 1993 with my wife Brenda. Five children between us and now five grandchildren.
  • Hobbies: Reading, Writing, Gliding, Gardening.
  • Ambition: Keep the grey matter working as long as possible. Achieve a 500km glide.

This picture below was taken by co-pilot who held camera with UV filter out of the window. At 8500 feet, Pyrenees near Jaca, Spain.

Gliding: Enjoying great views in the Pyrenees.

Thanks for sharing your discoveries alongside the Itchen River. Did you take any photos that you can post on here? Would be interesting to see the extent of the flooding and tree damage.

Perhaps it’s easier to take photographs while gliding than walking?

Interesting chap! I have walked this bit of the Itchen often in the past but would not attempt it at the moment.

A few weeks ago I walked (with welllies) from Bishopstoke Road to Withymead Lock. The week before I aborted a walk downstream from Bishopstoke Road as I was wearing only walking boots.

Janet – I’ll send you some photos.

Look forward to your photos — are they dramatic?

I can almost see, taste and hear Sri Lanka when I read Mike Sedgwick’s blog. It has a thrilling immediacy. Well done Mike!

      Dear Ita,

Mike is now almost unstoppable. He has written nearly 30 posts since February and I know there are many more fascinating stories to come. Aren’t we lucky to have been taken to Spain on a gliding adventure, and now a rather exotic trip to Sri Lanka? What a great storyteller.
