If you are a cat lover, or if you ever adopted a cat in Chandler’s Ford, you’ll know a kind lady called Helen Farrar.
I was surprised to bump into Helen Farrar yesterday in Winchester. Helen and her lovely ladies were running a bric-and-brac stall at St Maurice’s Covert, next to Dehenhams, in aid of her Cat & Kitten Rescue in Chandler’s Ford.
Two years ago, we adopted a lovely cat Billy from Helen.
Helen told me yesterday that the Cat & Kitten Rescue in Chandler’s Ford will be celebrating its 21st year next month, and there’ll be more fundraising events.
Helen set up the Cat and Kitten Rescue charity in 1992. Amazingly, at least 2,000 cats and kittens have been homed.
At Helen’s garden, she has a few purpose built, high quality pens for the cats. All pens have an individual electric blanket, a box and an upper shelf. When we visited Helen two years ago, she showed us around and explained to us the different characteristics of each cat, and why they were rescued (such as lost or abandoned, owner’s bereavement or financial hardship).
Helen loves her cats and she tries to find the best homes for them. She would always do a home visit and it just shows how much she cares.
To support Helen for her wonderful work, please contact her on 023 80253563. You’ll also see some of the cats that currently need home on this page.
How can you help?
Donation: “Help can be in the form of donations – cat food and quality bric a brac is always appreciated as is is a gift of money. Although we make no charge for adult cats, a monetary gift to cover some of our expenses is very welcome.”
Contact: “Putting your friends in touch with us to help us find homes more often is a great help too.”
Sales: “If you can spare time to help at one of our bric a brac sales you would be very welcome. It can be tiring, but we always have a good time doing it!”

I found an abandoned kitten by the side of the railway line last year. Luckily in my part of the world the lines aren’t electrified, so I was able to cross the tracks to rescue it without risk of electrocution. I couldn’t keep it – much as I would have liked to – so gave it to the local Cats Protection League.

Thank you Ruby for your comment. I’m pleased that you are alive to send us this message.
In Chandler’s Ford, lots of people would phone up Helen regarding any abandoned cat.
