Fairtrade Shopping Evening 2019 – Buy Fairtrade and Make a Difference

November 10, 2019 By Janet Williams Leave a Comment

The Fairtrade shopping evening at St Martin in the Wood Church in Hiltingbury last Friday was successful and enjoyable. Many people attended and had an opportunity to buy a variety of high quality fairtrade products to support disadvantaged producers and workers in the developing world.

Fairtrade events encourage us to be ethical consumers and raise awareness of trade justice.

May 19, 2019 By Hazel Bateman Leave a Comment

Did you know there was a Plants and Crafts sale at St Boniface church yesterday (Saturday 18th May 2019) from 10am to 2pm?

It was a popular community event run by Judith James, Chair of The Friends of St. Anne’s Hospital (Tanzania), with support from many members of St Boniface and St Martin’s churches. [Read more…] about Fundraising for Friends of St Anne’s Hospital and Defibrillator Fund

What You Value Most

May 17, 2019 By Allison Symes 5 Comments

Feature Image - What You Value Most

How often do you take time out to consider the things you value most? Like me, I suspect, not often enough but given it is so easy to be bogged down by the pressures of life and cynicism in general, I thought I would take time out to look at what I value most. The reasons why are self explanatory! [Read more…] about What You Value Most

Sri Lankan Bombings

May 2, 2019 By Mike Sedgwick Leave a Comment

I have visited Sri Lanka over 15 times now, living there for several months every year for the last 10 years. Early visits were during the civil war and there were inconveniences such as roadblocks, curfews and limitations on travel.

On one occasion my friends arranged an escort to the airport. There were no problems with me giving lectures at the University and to audiences containing Sinhala and Tamils. [Read more…] about Sri Lankan Bombings

Have You Ever Thought How Much Happier the World Would be Without Disease, War and Crime?

February 4, 2019 By David Lamb 5 Comments

Every day the media carries reports of wars, diseases and many evil things. There are times when reflections on this state of affairs involve a religious dimension. People from many faiths might pray for a better world and sometimes hope that their prayers might be answered. Camels, Smallpox, Big Cats, Wolves and Philosophy

January 28, 2019 By David Lamb 2 Comments

The Camel

Several years ago I was invited to serve on a European Council relating to the welfare of performing animals. I don’t know whether it actually started or disappeared into the mists of EU bureaucracy. I have interests in teaching animals and recently took an opportunity to spend some time with a delightful camel in France. [Read more…] about Camels, Smallpox, Big Cats, Wolves and Philosophy

A Grand Day Out to London from Chandler’s Ford

January 5, 2019 By Janet Williams 15 Comments

Yesterday morning I took the 7.14 train from Chandler’s Ford to London Waterloo. The return ticket (including London Underground all zones) cost £90.

Ideally I should have taken the 6.06 train, but I wasn’t feeling safe to get to the station so early by myself. Recently I’ve heard of news about people being mugged in Eastleigh and Chandler’s Ford, so was a bit more concerned. I considered driving to the station, buying tickets from the machine near the platform, but …. what if someone jumped out from nowhere and I was on my own? I also considered driving to Southampton Airport Parkway but parking would have cost £15 per day. [Read more…] about A Grand Day Out to London from Chandler’s Ford

By Andy Milner

Christmas is a busy time of year for most charities and the Jubilee Sailing trust (JST) is no exception.

Having enjoyed a lovely day at the Chandler’s Ford Joint Charities Christmas Market, we also attended the Romsey Christmas Market and most recently the Winchester Christmas Market in the stunning setting of Cathedral Close. [Read more…] about Sailing into Christmas with the Jubilee Sailing

Remembrance Sunday in Chandler’s Ford 2018

November 11, 2018 By Janet Williams 3 Comments

There was a rainbow in the morning and the rain stopped for the Remembrance parade and services.

At the Chandler’s Ford war memorial, a crowd of hundreds – from veterans to youth groups, families, and people of different ethnic groups – all gathered to pay their respects.

Hursley Road looked like this in 1918 (peace day celebration), and 1989. [Read more…] about Remembrance Sunday in Chandler’s Ford 2018

Margatet Doores: Love’s Greatest Gift – Remembrance

November 8, 2018 By Margaret Doores 1 Comment

In the late spring of 2014 I read with interest of the national plans to commemorate the fallen of WW1. It was accepted that these commemorations would not in any way be an attempt to glorify war but were to be an acknowledgment of the great sacrifice made by so many.

It was also decided that these commemorations would continue until November 2018. It was suggested that researching the names on local war memorials could be an appropriate way of doing this. [Read more…] about Margatet Doores: Love’s Greatest Gift – Remembrance

Review: Fairtrade Evening in Chandler’s Ford 2018

November 6, 2018 By Hazel Bateman Leave a Comment

I felt privileged to help with the fantastic Fairtrade evening at St Martin’s on 2 November.

Items for sale included crafts from Leprosy Mission, Eastleigh’s Shop Equality (my husband couldn’t resist buying a baby wooden duck to go with his collection), fairly traded clothing from Nomad, beautiful jewellery made high in the hills in Guatemala and a huge Traidcraft stall. Book Review: Margaret Doores’ Love’s Greatest Gift – Remembrance

October 27, 2018 By Christine Clark Leave a Comment

If you have ever walked past the war memorial outside St Boniface Church in Hursley Road, you may have wondered about those named on it. Perhaps you wanted to know a bit more about them and how they died in the Great War. Or maybe a bit more about the Chandler’s Ford they left in 1914. Love’s Greatest Gift – Remembrance, by Margaret Doores

September 21, 2018 By SO53 News Leave a Comment

Have you ever walked past the war memorial outside St. Boniface Church and stopped and wondered about the lives that lie beneath the names? Where did they live? Were they born here in Chandler’s Ford?

What sort of work did they do before joining up or were they career soldiers? And who was Margaret Caswell? She’s the only woman who is remembered here.

Well, now’s your chance to find out. [Read more…] about Love’s Greatest Gift – Remembrance, by Margaret Doores

Research: Supporting Dementia Carers. Need your Help.

August 24, 2018 By SO53 News 2 Comments

This post is written by Noreena Liu:

I am a PhD student at University of Southampton. Currently, I am researching ways to support dementia carers (people who have a relative affected by dementia). I have created a mock up game. The game shows different messages about dementia and gives advice for dementia family.

Now, I am looking for participants who have any relative with dementia. Participants will be asked to play this game or watch a video for 5 minutes and complete the respective questionnaire. It will take about 10 minute in total.

I will be extremely grateful If you could take part in this research by filling in the questionnaire. [Read more…] about Research: Supporting Dementia Carers. Need your Help.

Remembrance Sunday in Chandler’s Ford 2017

November 12, 2017 By Janet Williams 4 Comments

This morning, veterans and a few hundreds people commemorated those who lost their lives in the two World Wars and later conflicts, at the Chandler’s Ford war memorial.

Remembrance Sunday, which falls on 12 November in 2017, is a day to remember and honour those who have sacrificed themselves to secure and protect our freedom.

A two-minute silence was held across the country and wreaths were laid at memorials.

In Chandler’s Ford, people old and young were gathering at the war memorial, outside the St. Boniface Church on Hursley Road, including 93-year-old war veteran Frank Damerell, Night Fighter Navigator (the aircraft was “The Mosquito Night Fighter”) during the Second World War. The Vinings Invade Hiltonbury Farmhouse!

June 11, 2017 By Andy Vining 1 Comment

On Monday morning 5th June 2017, I, along with my wife Val, my sister, Heather Witham (Nee Vining), my brother Simon Vining and his son Bob Vining met with Rob Preston to see what progress had been made in the refurbishments of Hiltonbury Farmhouse since I was last there a couple of weeks ago.

It is certainly a “Proper” Building site now as it was a requirement for all of us to sign the visitors book and that we all wore high viz jackets and proper boots or to use the technical term we all had to wear “PPE” Personal Protective Equipment.
