MDG Players and Romsey Players – Five Go Mad for Shakespeare – Review

April 27, 2018 By Allison Symes 5 Comments

Feature Image - MDG Players Review - Shakespeare. Many thanks to the MDG Players for the programme.

I went to the Dovetail Centre on 19th April to see Five Go Mad for Shakespeare. Being fond of the Famous Five stories by Enid Blyton and, much later on, the Bard of Avon, this was a production which had my name on it in a manner of speaking. This is my take on the show following on from Ben Williams’ excellent summary. [Read more…] about MDG Players and Romsey Players – Five Go Mad for Shakespeare – Review

The 14th Eastleigh Scout and Guide Band (“The Spitfires”) had a busy day taking part in three St George’s Day Parades today.

They started at 10:00 in Eastleigh, and 12:45 in Winchester, then 14:30 in Chandler’s Ford. Emma Thompson, Media Officer and Deputy Drum Major from the Band said they would like to thank everyone who turned out to support each event.

Review: Five Go Mad for Shakespeare by Chandler’s Ford MDG and Romsey Players

April 21, 2018 By Ben Williams Leave a Comment

The latest comedy from MDG Players from Chandler’s Ford, and the Romsey Players combines two very British writers – William Shakespeare and Enid Blyton. Shakespeare’s works are updated and refreshed for a modern age and hilarity ensues. Want to know what happens if Theresa May decided to quote Henry V? How about if Romeo and Juliet took place in rival retirement homes? [Read more…] about Review: Five Go Mad for Shakespeare by Chandler’s Ford MDG and Romsey Players

Sharing my Videos and Memories: by Syd Hutchinson from Chandler’s Ford

March 24, 2018 By SO53 News 2 Comments

By Syd Hutchinson

I have lived in Chandler’s Ford for over 30 years. I am retired now and realised when I pop my clogs, all my videos and photos would probably be deleted from the drives, so decided to share many of them on YouTube.

I created my own channel Syd Hutchinson, and have had nearly 120,000 viewings in the last 3 years. I re-edited some of our holiday videos from far-flung places and added them. It’s a shame many countries we have visited were many years ago when video quality was not so good, so many places are not included. Fast approaching 100 videos now ranging from wildlife to National Trust properties. I even have a video that was used on the Travel Channel. Those were the Days: the Potters Heron Hotel in the 50s and 60s

March 22, 2018 By Graham MacLean 2 Comments

I thought I would take this opportunity to respond to Chandler’s Ford Today’s informal invitation to provide some input that might catch the eye of a few older folk.

Being an environmentally aware person and property man who cut his teeth in a very beautiful part of England I was at an early age drawn to the Potters Heron for a variety of reasons. It is magnificently located for its purpose on a stretch of highway that sweeps majestically in a gentle curve on its way to my favouritecity.  Strangely enough, and it may seem totally irrelevant but I had the same feeling when I last swept along the Big Sur stretch of the coastal highway in CA. Another Potters Heron Story Before the 1966 Fire

March 21, 2018 By Martin Napier 2 Comments

I remember the Potters Heron before the 1966 fire, and another event prior to that date, probably in the late 1950s…

The original line of the main road there was much closer to the Potters Heron than now, due to a particularly nasty accident that took place then.

A group of actors or celebrities of the day were travelling on what was then the A31, in a couple of fast (for then) cars. [Read more…] about Another Potters Heron Story Before the 1966 Fire

Another Turn of the Potter’s Wheel

March 21, 2018 By Robbie Sprague 4 Comments

The Potters Heron has been known affectionately over the years by some as the Potted Herring. I’ve known it for nearly 60 years.

It was indeed a very popular restaurant and bar. It had a thatched roof and was rather more attractive and intimate than the building that replaced it after the fire in 1966, although the hotel that rose from the ashes retained something of the character of the original building. How to be Safe in a Thatched Roof Property?

March 20, 2018 By SO53 News 4 Comments

How to be safe in a thatched roof property?

According to Hampshire Fire and Rescue Service, 90 percent of thatch fires are down to a faulty flue or chimney. The thatch is designed to repel water which makes extinguishing these fires difficult.

These photos of the Potters Heron Hotel in Ampfield were taken by local resident Robbie Sprague this morning. The hotel went up in flames last night and more than 170 emergency service personnel attended the fire. [Read more…] about How to be Safe in a Thatched Roof Property?

Great Daffodil Appeal

This year’s Great Daffodil Appeal gets underway shortly and we would be delighted if you could spare some time to volunteer locally at one of our collections.

Could you give one or two hours so Marie Curie Nurses can care for more people with terminal illnesses? Just 2 hours of your time provides around 4 hours of nursing care. [Read more…] about Marie Curie Collections in and around Chandler’s Ford and Eastleigh

Review: Jack and the Beanstalk by Chameleon Theatre Chandler’s Ford – January 2018

February 9, 2018 By SO53 News 2 Comments

By Geoff Dodsworth

I should begin by explaining that the regular contributors who normally write these articles were unavailable on this occasion and consequently we were asked if we would write the review ourselves. I volunteered as I had had no involvement in this Pantomime, apart from watching it as a member of the Front of House Staff for the last three performances so hopefully my review will be objective. I have also attempted to follow the style of the previous articles which has been to describe rather than criticise. Dovetail Art Project with Revd David Hollingsworth

January 20, 2018 By Janet Williams Leave a Comment

A while back, the Chandler’s Ford Methodist Church was busy collecting signatures of people in the Church and its community. Visitors to carol services, customers in the Dovetail Café, and all the groups who use the premises were being invited to sign in charcoal or chalk on special paper.

These names have now been turned into a work of art by an artist, Rev David Hollingsworth, who is skilled at community works of art. [Read more…] about Dovetail Art Project with Revd David Hollingsworth
