October 31, 2016 By Janet Williams 13 Comments

Stairway Bakery and Coffee Shop at the Fryern Arcade in Chandler’s Ford has closed.

The notice on the window reads:

“As from the Saturday 29th of October 2016, this shop will close. We would like to thank all our loyal customers over the years for their custom and support. We wish all of you all the best for the future.

Please note the shop will reopen in the near future under different management with a new theme. “

Do you buy bread or cakes from a bakery? Do you have a favourite bakery that you would like to recommend? And, what do you bake (not necessarily in the Great British Bake Off style)?

My favorite bakery is at Bitterne Triangle in Southampton. I discovered it as a student back in the 1980s and spent a fair proportion of my student grant (different times!) on their cream cakes. I still pop in from time to time, when I am passing.

Used to live right by the Bakery some years back. Would walk over there every Saturday morning & buy a freshly baked Granary loaf, consuming the lot over the weekend.
Hope the new owners keep the bakery baking!

Not sure if the new business is going to be a bakery. Let’s wait and see.

Early in our relationship, I took my wife, a southerner from the New Forest, up to God’s own County to meet my Aunt and learn how to make Yorkshire Pudding. What a good move that was.

Recently she has been baking bread out here in Sri lanka. Apparently you have to compensate for being 2000 ft above sea level. It toasts well but we had to learn to shake the gekos out of the toaster beforehand. One poor fellow came out quite hot. And you can buy Marmite out here so all’s right with the world.

Just found out that the shop has been purchased by the Indian restaurant upstairs.

It will reopen as an ice cream parlour!

(The actual bakery part hidden away at the basement will remain as a bakery, kept by the owners for their existing breadmaking business).

Thank you Paul. Very interesting news indeed!

Please tell us more about the news from Fryern.

No further Fryern news, but can let you know (if you’ve not heard already) that the old ‘Alldays’ newsagent shop next to Waitrose that has been vacant for 10 years will soon be occupied by ‘Charters’ – the Estate Agent from Winchester who are expanding into the Chandlers Ford property sales market.

Thanks Paul. You still know more than most of us do!

Yes Chandler’s Ford needs estate agents like Eastleigh needs coffee shops.

I was in Pampurred Pets in Romsey a few weeks ago and they said they were opening a new pet shop in Chandler’s Ford early next year as Pets Corner (who own them). The assistant didn’t know the exact location, but he said it was going to be near Waitrose – I assumed they were moving into the old ‘Alldays’ store but it looks like it must be somewhere else!

Thanks for your comment, Sue. It’d be lovely to have a pet shop to make this place more interesting. Chandler’s Ford is full of pets.

The old ‘Alldays’ store looks like it was made up of three units, so it’s possible the pet stop is moving in there too. I notice that a ‘Let Agreed’ sign has been erected outside now and a bit of work has started.

Thanks for the update Sue. Yes we would like to know what’s happening in the area. Have coffee, then buy some pet food……

Just to say the pet shop Tropic Exotics (next to KFC) in Eastleigh has closed. Last Saturday was its last day. If there is a pet shop here in Chandler’s Ford, I hope it sells food for lizards, so that we don’t need to travel to Romsey to get locusts.
