What has happened to the trees by Monks Brook in Valley Park?

January 16, 2017 By Janet Williams 6 Comments

Who could tell me what has happened to the trees by Monks Brook in Valley Park?

In our walk yesterday afternoon we saw many trees had been cut down.

Valley Park by Monks Brook - many trees had been cut down.

Is there a new project going on there? Perhaps these trees had been cut down some time ago, but it’s the first time I’ve seen the complete change of scene in Valley Park.

It’s along Monks Brook, near Valley Park play area and where the new footbridge is.

An area has also been fenced off.

Now it would be impossible to reach the dog waste bin behind the fence.

Hi. I understand the fencing is to stop bank erosion, I contacted TVBC regarding the poo bin on Friday and I found today Monday it had already been moved, fast response I must say and I understand the logs will be left for natural habitat for creatures. Hope this helps a little.

Thanks Jo for the information. I bet the beetles will like the logs.
Local dogs may find it easy to jump into the water.

Work is starting on the reinforcement of the banks of this stretch of Monk’s Brook. As you can see, there has been considerable erosion. A lot of the trees were overhanging the footpath. There are other bins available for dog poo along the footpath.

Thanks Sheila for your explanation. Now the area looks much brighter. It’s a lovely area for walking.

We have been wondering what is going on, too. There was some concern that the banks were eroding, so I can see why they might fence it off from dogs and people, but removing the trees is likely to make the banks less stable, so who knows?

Also, walking down Sutherlands Way this morning, I noticed that a lot of trees and shrubs had been removed there too, giving an alternative informal and unauthorised access to crossing the railway line……

Janet, I think that the trees alongside Monks Brook & the path in Valley Park, might have been felled due to their obstructing visability on the pathway. This is a dual use (Cyclists & pedestrians) path, & due to its questionable design, incorporating blind corners, it was possible for potential conflicts to occur between users, owing to lack of visability on these numerous corners.
