Review: Chandler’s Ford Joint Charities 45th Christmas Market 2018

November 15, 2018 By Janet Williams 2 Comments

As the government is in Brexit turmoil (‘near Civil War’, according to the BBC), we’re bringing you some stability here from Chandler’s Ford for a change.

The annual Chandler’s Ford Joint Charities Christmas Market brings the sort of stability, unity, and friendship that we all need at times of crisis. Last weekend I went to the market, as I had done so for many years, and felt warmth, joy, and a genuine sense of hope for the future. Review: Fairtrade Evening in Chandler’s Ford 2018

November 6, 2018 By Hazel Bateman Leave a Comment

I felt privileged to help with the fantastic Fairtrade evening at St Martin’s on 2 November.

Items for sale included crafts from Leprosy Mission, Eastleigh’s Shop Equality (my husband couldn’t resist buying a baby wooden duck to go with his collection), fairly traded clothing from Nomad, beautiful jewellery made high in the hills in Guatemala and a huge Traidcraft stall. By Mark Miller, Three Rivers Community Rail Partnership Officer

Last Thursday evening, around 30 Guides from Chandler’s Ford helped tidy the station in a brilliant display of community spirit.

As part of their work, the station had a full litter pick, the drainage holes on the footbridge were cleared, weeds were pulled up, leaves were collected up. [Read more…] about Guides Tidied Up Chandler’s Ford Station

Eastleigh Remembers – Truly Memorable

September 15, 2018 By Janet Williams 2 Comments

Eastleigh is marking the 100th anniversary year of the end of the first world war today. The event pays tribute to Eastleigh’s role in the First World War.

In Eastleigh this afternoon, I visited a re-enactment of a field hospital, some vintage military vehicles, and have seen great displays by charities and businesses, such as Hampshire Scouts, One Community, Defense Medical Welfare Service, British Legion, Eastleigh and District Local History Society, Eastleigh Gurkha Nepalese Association, Royal Air Forces Association, the Rotary Club, Air Cadets, Peter Green, and local author Paul Nolan. A Look Back at the Hursley Park Book Fair

July 13, 2018 By Allison Symes Leave a Comment

A Look Back at the Hursley Park Book Fair. Image by Allison Symes

This is my look back at the recent Hursley Park Book Fair.  Many thanks to Glenn Salter (aka author Simon Fairfax) for organising the Fair.  So much hard work (and generally unseen at that) goes on behind the scenes to make these events happen.  For an inaugural event, I thought the Fair worked well but more on that shortly… [Read more…] about A Look Back at the Hursley Park Book Fair

One thing I can confirm is that anyone selling cold drinks or icecream had a busy time of it at this year’s Fryern Funtasia. Whether it was the hottest Funtasia known to Chandler’s Ford, I don’t know, but the queues for refreshments were long! [Read more…] about All the Fun of the Show: Fryern Funtasia Review 2018

A Great Community Event: Fryern Funtasia 2018

May 7, 2018 By Janet Williams 1 Comment

Today’s Fryern Funtasia in Chandler’s Ford was fun, as usual, and it was very well managed. Congratulations! I heard a few children fainted due to heat, but hope they have had some rest and are now feeling better. The organisers deserve our praise – they have put in so much effort to make sure everything ran so smoothly. [Read more…] about A Great Community Event: Fryern Funtasia 2018

Review: April Trio of Plays by Chameleon Theatre Company

April 28, 2018 By Ben Williams 1 Comment

Trio of plays 2018 feature

O, What a Lovers’ War by Karen Ince. Directed by Diana Mills.

The first play was focused on the First World War. This is a period of history I’m quite familiar with, as studying history has helped me understand the different sides of the war. I’m studying the downfall of Tsarist Russia in history and it’s linked with involvement in the First World War and I also recalled visiting Australia and reading up on the ANZAC troops involvement in the War. My mum was confused as to why the Union Flag appeared at the end, but the flag in its current form has existed since 1801. [Read more…] about Review: April Trio of Plays by Chameleon Theatre Company

MDG Players and Romsey Players – Five Go Mad for Shakespeare – Review

April 27, 2018 By Allison Symes 5 Comments

Feature Image - MDG Players Review - Shakespeare. Many thanks to the MDG Players for the programme.

I went to the Dovetail Centre on 19th April to see Five Go Mad for Shakespeare. Being fond of the Famous Five stories by Enid Blyton and, much later on, the Bard of Avon, this was a production which had my name on it in a manner of speaking. This is my take on the show following on from Ben Williams’ excellent summary. [Read more…] about MDG Players and Romsey Players – Five Go Mad for Shakespeare – Review

They started at 10:00 in Eastleigh, and 12:45 in Winchester, then 14:30 in Chandler’s Ford. Emma Thompson, Media Officer and Deputy Drum Major from the Band said they would like to thank everyone who turned out to support each event.

Review: Five Go Mad for Shakespeare by Chandler’s Ford MDG and Romsey Players

April 21, 2018 By Ben Williams Leave a Comment

The latest comedy from MDG Players from Chandler’s Ford, and the Romsey Players combines two very British writers – William Shakespeare and Enid Blyton. Shakespeare’s works are updated and refreshed for a modern age and hilarity ensues. Want to know what happens if Theresa May decided to quote Henry V? How about if Romeo and Juliet took place in rival retirement homes? [Read more…] about Review: Five Go Mad for Shakespeare by Chandler’s Ford MDG and Romsey Players

Great Daffodil Appeal

This year’s Great Daffodil Appeal gets underway shortly and we would be delighted if you could spare some time to volunteer locally at one of our collections.

Could you give one or two hours so Marie Curie Nurses can care for more people with terminal illnesses? Just 2 hours of your time provides around 4 hours of nursing care. [Read more…] about Marie Curie Collections in and around Chandler’s Ford and Eastleigh

Review: Jack and the Beanstalk by Chameleon Theatre Chandler’s Ford – January 2018

February 9, 2018 By SO53 News 2 Comments

By Geoff Dodsworth

I should begin by explaining that the regular contributors who normally write these articles were unavailable on this occasion and consequently we were asked if we would write the review ourselves. I volunteered as I had had no involvement in this Pantomime, apart from watching it as a member of the Front of House Staff for the last three performances so hopefully my review will be objective. I have also attempted to follow the style of the previous articles which has been to describe rather than criticise. Dovetail Art Project with Revd David Hollingsworth

January 20, 2018 By Janet Williams Leave a Comment

A while back, the Chandler’s Ford Methodist Church was busy collecting signatures of people in the Church and its community. Visitors to carol services, customers in the Dovetail Café, and all the groups who use the premises were being invited to sign in charcoal or chalk on special paper.

These names have now been turned into a work of art by an artist, Rev David Hollingsworth, who is skilled at community works of art. [Read more…] about Dovetail Art Project with Revd David Hollingsworth
