Winter – Ugliness and Beauty in Chandler’s Ford

February 5, 2016 By Allison Symes 3 Comments

I must admit winter is not my favourite season, much as I enjoy Christmas. Aside from the cold and the storms, the nights draw in that much earlier which limits the evening walks my better half and I can enjoy with the dog.

We love walking Mabel along The Monarch’s Way and the bridleways around that area (though right now it would be more accurately called The Muddy Way). [Read more…] about Winter – Ugliness and Beauty in Chandler’s Ford

EU – In or Out?

February 4, 2016 By Mike Sedgwick 4 Comments

What do you know about the European Union? Not much, I bet. Yet we are all going to be asked to vote about staying in or leaving.

It will be a decision made of ignorance for what do we know of the EU? Do you know how to contact your representative or even who they are and what problems they may be able to help with? [Read more…] about EU – In or Out?

January 29, 2016 By Allison Symes 22 Comments

What are your favourite forms of writing? Fiction? Non-fiction? Poetry?

Do you ever think when you pick up a pen or put fingers to keyboard we are all following a tradition going back thousands of years? Or appreciate how important writing, in all its forms, is for cultural reasons? Or how dangerous writing can be? Thanks to Peter Child’s recent email to Eastleigh Borough Council, Chandler’s Ford residents now have an answer as to why the Eastleigh Borough Local Plan exhibitions exclude Chandler’s ford.

Tracy Haskett, Planning Officer of Eastleigh Borough Council, encouraged Chandler’s Ford residents who are interested in Eastleigh Borough Local Plan (2011-2036) to attend the next nearest event in Allbrook Hill on Saturday 23 January, 10am until 4pm. Steve Brine MP: Call for Future Local Plan Exhibitions to Include Chandler’s Ford

January 19, 2016 By SO53 News 10 Comments

Message from Steve Brine MP

Eastleigh Borough Council Local Plan is a saga that has dragged on for many years while neighbouring local authorities (including Winchester in the other part of my constituency) have theirs signed off.

Now, the council is finally running its “Issues and Options” consultation – until 17th February – which will eventually lead to a plan that maps out future development right across the Borough. [Read more…] about Steve Brine MP: Call for Future Local Plan Exhibitions to Include Chandler’s Ford

Sharing the Joy of Libraries

January 16, 2016 By Allison Symes 5 Comments

I love the word serendipity. It has a lovely meaning and a great sound.

This post, I think, can be thought of as being a case of serendipity.

I was planning a post about the joy of libraries for some time and then read Mike’s wonderful article from Sri Lanka about renovating the school library, which confirmed to me I should go ahead with this now. [Read more…] about Sharing the Joy of Libraries

Hampshire Library Consultation: Have your Say

January 16, 2016 By Janet Williams 1 Comment

In the days before Google, people used to call their librarians with questions.

“What kind of an apple did Eve eat?”

“Why do 18th century English paintings have so many squirrels in them, and how did they tame them so that they wouldn’t bite the painter?” [Read more…] about Hampshire Library Consultation: Have your Say

Journey to Sri Lanka: Creating a Local Library for 1,000 Girls

January 12, 2016 By Mike Sedgwick 4 Comments

On the main road into Kandy there is a narrow doorway leading to Dharmawickrama, a school for 1,000 girls.

My wife Brenda arranged to visit to see what a state school is like. The contrasts within were striking. The building was poorly maintained and conditions were crowded and there were few facilities, no play area, squatter toilets, builder’s rubble in some corridors. Shakespeare Inspirations – Hamlet at Thornden Hall

January 8, 2016 By Allison Symes 1 Comment

I went to see the National Theatre’s production of Hamlet at Thornden Hall in October 2015 with Janet Williams and her son Ben.

Benedict Cumberbatch was superb in the title role.

I love the idea of being able to watch West End productions without having the hassle of going there. I’ve never been to a West End production and if I had the time to go there, possibly with an overnight stay, I should imagine that would be a wonderful experience. News from Eastleigh parkrun

January 6, 2016 By chippy minton 7 Comments

Eastleigh Park Run

There were extra opportunities for a parkrun over the Christmas period in Eastleigh.

As well as the standard Saturday morning events, runs were also organised for Christmas and New Year’s Day mornings. In addition, the New Year’s Day events in Winchester and Southampton started 90 minutes later.

This gave the truly dedicated a total of five parkruns in nine days.  I managed three of the five – so I must be semi-dedicated. [Read more…] about News from Eastleigh parkrun

Tropical Diseases – What You Need to Know

January 5, 2016 By Mike Sedgwick 2 Comments

Tropical diseases? Not your problem? Oh yes they are and not just because of the need for anti-malarials when you go on holiday.

I heard about some of the problems and successes at the first International Meeting on Tropical Medicine to be held in the University of Peradeniya in Sri Lanka. I went along and learned a few thing of general interest. [Read more…] about Tropical Diseases – What You Need to Know

Dispatches from Sri Lanka – The Tunnel in Kandy

December 31, 2015 By Mike Sedgwick Leave a Comment

(Editor’s note: For new readers to Chandler’s Ford Today, just to say that once in a while this site has kind of become Sri Lanka Today, while our well-loved writer from Chandler’s Ford travelled to Sri Lanka as analysing snake poisons seems to be a fun hobby when you retire.

A few more interesting stories from Sri Lanka will soon appear in the next few days. Happy reading!)

To get to our house in Kandy we have to go through a tunnel. The alternative is a 3 km detour. The other day we had the Granddaddy of Tropical Storms with torrential rain from 3.00 pm until about 3.00 am. In the morning the tunnel was blocked and we had to get to work via another route.
