Otterbourne Mummers: Traditional Mummers Play in Otterbourne, Christmas 2016

December 20, 2016 By Gopi Chandroth 2 Comments

Yesterday, we went to see the Mummers street play in Otterbourne, Hampshire.

It is a very old and traditional folk play and depicts King George slaying the dragon, Turkish knights and other adversaries. It was good fun to watch and the costumes were very colourful. [Read more…] about Otterbourne Mummers: Traditional Mummers Play in Otterbourne, Christmas 2016

Some Christmas Thoughts

December 18, 2016 By Churches Together in Chandler's Ford 3 Comments

By Reverend Peter Hutchinson

So, as the old saying goes, “Christmas is upon us and the goose is getting fat” and, to stay in Dickensian vogue, “Bah, Humbug!” Sorry, but I had to get that off my chest! Seriously, I do find Christmas hugely stressful and have often wished that it would simply go away.

As a Clergyman I find that it is a time of high workload, with many additional pressures (as is also the case for so many in the retail trades). [Read more…] about Some Christmas Thoughts

Introducing Myself – Nicola Slade

December 13, 2016 By Nicola Slade 10 Comments

Nicola Slade Hampshire author

I write mystery novels set in and around Winchester – and sometimes even in Chandler’s Ford!

Chandler’s Ford has been home since 1981 when we moved here from Surrey for my husband’s new job. I come originally from Poole and my husband comes from Oxfordshire. When we moved here our son was twelve and went to Thornden, followed in due course by his sisters: our elder daughter who was ten when we moved here and went into the top year at Hiltingbury Juniors, and the younger one, who was five, who started school at Hiltingbury Infants. November 28, 2016 By chippy minton 1 Comment

Members from Eastleigh Operatic and Musical Society singing Christmas carols in Eatsleigh, 2016.

Last week’s autumn production for the Eastleigh Operatic & Musical Society gave us an Extravaganza of Musical Shows – a selection of both some of the better-known and lesser-known numbers from musical theatre.

There is a huge canon of musical shows to choose from, and the company had selected an eclectic programme to showcase the skills of the performers.  [Read more…] about Review: Extravaganza of Musical Shows by Eastleigh Operatic and Musical Society

Meet 92-year-old War Veteran Frank Damerell

November 20, 2016 By Janet Williams 7 Comments

Last Sunday I had a brief interview with Frank Damerell, the 92-year-old war veteran from Chandler’s Ford.

Frank arrived at the War Memorial on Hursley Road just after 10.30am, accompanied by his son Phil. Frank later laid a RAFA (Royal Air Forces Association) wreath during the annual Remembrance Sunday Service at the war memorial at St. Boniface Church in Chandler’s Ford. Books of 2016; Ebook Surgeries at Chandler’s Ford Library

November 18, 2016 By Allison Symes 1 Comment

Feature Image - Chandler's Ford Library Events - November 2016

I am really pleased to bring news of two events happening at Chandler’s Ford Library this month. I’m pleased because the events themselves sound fun. I loved the recent link up between Chandler’s Ford Library and Merdon School for the Story Shuffle Project and the following two events are also excellent ideas.

I hope all who can go to these events have a wonderful time at them. [Read more…] about Books of 2016; Ebook Surgeries at Chandler’s Ford Library

Chandler’s Ford Memories: Station Lane; Being a Cadet in the 1950s

November 15, 2016 By Roger White 7 Comments

I have another little memory from my childhood in Chandler’s Ford prompted by a very old photo of Station Lane in Chandler’s Ford.

I remember there was a Mills’ family. They had moved down from Bootle in Liverpool. Mr Mills was I think in the The Royal Army Medical Corps (RAMC) during World War Two, but he was in the St. John Ambulance brigade. Review: Joint Charities 43rd Annual Christmas Market Chandler’s Ford 2016

November 12, 2016 By Janet Williams 11 Comments

This morning I went to the Joint Charities 43rd Annual Christmas Market at Chandler’s Ford Methodist Church.

I love this annual tradition – as it kicks off my internal clock for Christmas. It reminds me that I need to start pick up a pen, write a few Christmas cards (while adding names or crossing names off my Christmas card list as well).

This morning, former Eastleigh Mayor Councillor Jane Welsh opened the 43rd Christmas Market. [Read more…] about Review: Joint Charities 43rd Annual Christmas Market Chandler’s Ford 2016

Review: All My Sons – Excellent Production by Chameleon Theatre Company

November 11, 2016 By Allison Symes 7 Comments

eature Image: All My Sons

I went to see All My Sons by Arthur Miller at the Chameleon Theatre Company in Hursley Road recently.

Wonderful performances, a great story and I’m glad to have discovered this play. It is also, I think, apt that this review appears on 11th November given All My Sons is set in 1947. The impact of World War Two is still red raw on grieving families (as the play makes very clear).  [Read more…] about Review: All My Sons – Excellent Production by Chameleon Theatre Company
