Chinese New Year Celebration at WestQuay: Sunday 3rd February 2019 from 11am

This year, the Chinese New Year Celebration in Southampton will start early. Even though the Chinese New Year this year is on Tuesday the 5th of February, you can celebrate it two days earlier in Southampton.

It is the Year of the Pig.

The Chinese New Year celebration is organised by The Chinese Association of Southampton (CAS). It will take place at WestQuay Southampton on Sunday 3rd February 2019 from 11am.

The exciting programme includes the authentic Chinese Lion dance by the Waterside Lion Dance club, traditional Chinese dances and musics by local Chinese art societies, Taichi and Kungfu performance by Wutan Kungfu school, traditional Chinese New Year songs by local Chinese, Children song from Southampton Chinese School as well as a range of interesting Chinese workshops from the Confucius Institute for you to take part.

To add to the excitement, there will also be some surprise performances by other local communities.

There will also be two other big events in February 2019 in Southampton.

  • Friday 15th of February: the “Chinese National Dress (Qipao) Show and Contest” will be held at Solent University (Spark Building) from 5pm to 10pm.
  • Sunday 17th of February: a Lantern Parade will start from the John Hansard Gallery (JHG) at Guildhall Square through the Bargate and surrounding area. The parade will be headed by a Chinese ‘dragon’ and followed by a Chinese ‘lion’.
