Books of 2016; Ebook Surgeries at Chandler’s Ford Library

November 18, 2016 By Allison Symes 1 Comment

I am really pleased to bring news of two events happening at Chandler’s Ford Library this month. I’m pleased because the events themselves sound fun. I loved the recent link up between Chandler’s Ford Library and Merdon School for the Story Shuffle Project and the following two events are also excellent ideas.

I hope all who can go to these events have a wonderful time at them.

Books of 2016 Event

The library will be hosting a discussion on Books of 2016 on Wednesday 30th November. The hosts for the evening will be Angela Hicken, HCT Literature Officer, and Ben Tanter of P&G Wells Booksellers, Winchester. (P&G Wells are also the official book shop for the Winchester Writers’ Festival and have stands there throughout the weekend).

The event starts at 7 pm but you will need to book. Tickets cost £5.00, which includes refreshments. You can get tickets directly from the library or via a booking line (02380 276098). A third option is to book online at www.hants.gov.uk.shop – see the link.

The books listed for discussion are:-

  1. Glorious Heresies by Lisa McInerney
  2. The Lie Tree by Frances Hardinge
  3. Eligible by Curtis Sittenfeld
  4. Everyone Brave is Forgiven by Chris Cleave
  5. When Breath Becomes Air by Paul Kalinethi
  6. High Mountains of Portugal by Yann Martel
  7. Harry Potter and the Cursed Child by J.K. Rowling
  8. The Crossing by Andrew Miller

There will also be a chance to win a copy of the Harry Potter and the Cursed Child book of the play.

The other event is actually something that will run for the rest of the month.

Drop in Surgery – E-books and E-magazines

These surgeries will be held every Saturday morning for the rest of November (19th and 26th).

It is forgotten, I think, that libraries lend e-books and e-magazines. So you should be able to find the answers here to any queries you may have about using your Kindle or other reading device for these materials. And if you are new to e-books and e-magazines, these surgeries are the very thing to help.

You will find out about them using Hampshire Libraries website on a PC or by using apps on your own tablet. Library staff will show you how to get started – then the fun begins!!!

No appointment or booking is needed for this. Drop in times are between 10 am and 12 noon and the surgeries are free.

I love e-books (but have yet to try e-magazines. I must get around to it but you should see my To Read list as it is!). I’m glad the libraries are showing initiative here and at the end of the day, an e-book is no threat to the printed word. It is merely another format.

About Allison Symes

I'm a published flash fiction and short story writer, as well as a blogger. My fiction work has appeared in anthologies from Cafelit and Bridge House Publishing.

My first flash fiction collection, From Light to Dark and Back Again, was published by Chapeltown Books in 2017.

My follow-up, Tripping the Flash Fantastic, was published by Chapeltown Books in 2020.

I adore the works of many authors but my favourites are Jane Austen, P.G. Wodehouse and Terry Pratchett.

I like to describe my fiction as fairytales with bite.
