New – Tropic Exotics in Eastleigh Town Centre

April 25, 2015 By Ben Williams 5 Comments

Note: November 2016:

Tropic Exotics closed its door on 19 Nov 2016.

Last day of Tropic Exotics in Eastleigh, Nov 2016.

Below is the original post published in April 2015:

Today my mum and I chanced across a new shop right next to KFC in Eastleigh Town Centre. The shop is called Tropic Exotics and it has just opened today.

Tropic Exotics has a wide range of exotic pets, from lizards, tortoises, frogs, snakes and tarantulas. In other words, my kind of shop.

The shop is quite small but surprisingly it keeps a lot of interesting animals there. While we were there, the shop was very crowded.

There are lots of animals, including a Nile Monitor (who didn’t want to come out), lots of pythons and a caiman (who wasn’t for sale). Some of them were really cheap too. Fire Bellied Newts were £10! I can actually afford that!

I like reptiles and other exotic pets and they have always interested me.

I own a blue tongued skink called Georgy and used to own a milk snake called Fang, who ran away and hasn’t been found. I just love reptiles. In fact, they’re my favourite animal class.

I particularly have a thing for snakes and monitor lizards, which include Komodo dragons, perenties, Nile Monitors, crocodile monitors and the awesome yet extinct Megalania. I’ve watched many David Attenborough’s nature programmes and I’ve learnt a lot about reptiles and other animals.

I think having a pet shop here in Eastleigh is great as it may attract more independent shops into the local area and widen the range of shops as opposed to charity and clothes shops. This also means that we no longer have to drive to Romsey to get food for Georgy, as the pet shop is just right here. We bought some locusts for Georgy from Tropic Exotics this afternoon.

Here are some pictures from the shop:

What do you do with a monitor lizard when it gets big? They can get very big.

I think people let them walk around the house like a cat or dog, but only if it has been reared from a very young age. I think a big enough cage would be able to have a fully grown one.

Tropic Exotics have the best wide range of reptiles. The staff are very welcoming and helpful. They treat their animals with respect and keep them well. I would highly recommend Tropic Exotics if you’re interested in reptiles. It has to be the best I’ve ever seen.

Yes the staff were very friendly and they seemed to know quite a lot about their animals!

Shirley told me they’re going to use the upstairs space for parties (for children to handle the pets), and they’re going to focus on educating people how to look after individual pets. It’s such a great idea.

We’ll visit the shop again for sure. I wish Tropic Exotics all the best.
