Hugh Benham: Sacred Choral Music

January 22, 2020 By SO53 News 4 Comments

A new CD of choral music by Hugh Benham, director of music at St Boniface CofE Church, Hursley Road, has just been released by Convivium Records as disc CR050 – Hugh Benham: Sacred Choral Music.

Copies may be ordered from Hugh at H.Benham@Soton.ac.uk at £10 – delivery is usually possible within a day or two. CDs are also available (as are digital downloads) from the Convivium Records website.

The CD was recorded by Convivium Singers (directed by Alexander Norman) at St Alban the Martyr, Birmingham in 2019, with Malcolm Archer (organ).

George Richford (former director of music at Romsey Abbey) was producer, and has commented: ‘Accessible works for choir and organ are featured alongside much more demanding a cappella music, all of which is meticulously crafted… all of the music is afresh with creativity and imaginative text setting. Everyone will find music here that they will love and appreciate. It’s clear that the performers loved this music too.’

Well done, Hugh. I wish you every success with this disk and look forward to listening to it when home again. I have a great fondness for sacred music even though I am a non-believer. It has qualities no other genres of music possess from a majestic power to a quiet tranquillity and the tradition of choral singing.
