FREE Theatre Evenings For The Elderly In Chandler’s Ford

November 12, 2013 By Nick Coleman 4 Comments

The Chameleon Theatre Company of Chandlers Ford are now offering free transport to the elderly and disabled residents of local care homes as well as free seats at four of their productions each year at The Ritchie Hall in Hursley Road in Chandler’s Ford.

Chris Greenwood (UKIP) Hampshire County Councillor is covering the cost of the transport via his Local Community Support Fund.

“I was pleased to receive The Chameleons’ application to fund this initiative and had no hesitation in releasing the money from my Local Community Support Fund. It was heart-warming to learn of the Chameleons’ community-spirited gesture to offer free entertainment to our local elderly and disabled residents,” confirmed Cllr Greenwood after attending their latest play “The Nightingales”, a light-hearted comedy set in 1957.

The Background Story

Free seats have been offered to the elderly residents of our local care homes for more than 40 years, but the problem facing these excluded members of the local community has been getting them to and from the Ritchie Hall. Steve Mursell, Clerk to Chandler’s Ford Parish Council told me about Hampshire County Council’s Community Support Grants and suggested we apply to Cllr Greenwood the UKIP representative for Eastleigh West for help.

I also knew Jean Roberts-Jones, Chief Executive Officer at One Community through his membership of Eastleigh Business Network. Jean offered to provide 15-seater buses at a reduced cost. The bus drivers are all volunteers too, so it adds to the community-minded energy running through this worthwhile initiative.

One Community buses will be collecting 70 to 80 elderly and disabled residents from the local care homes in January 2014 bringing them to The Ritchie Hall to enjoy a free performance of Peter Pan, the Pantomime being staged by The Chameleon Theatre Company from 24th of January to 1st of February in 2014.
