Gardening Tips for May by Wellie

May 2, 2016 By Wellie Leave a Comment

Summer is approaching but don’t be tempted to put out summer bedding until the risk of frosts are over, and make sure they have been hardened off before planting out.

Dahlia plants can be planted out at the end of the month. [Read more…] about Gardening Tips for May by Wellie

Gardening Tips for April by Wellie

April 4, 2016 By Wellie Leave a Comment

Hydrangea flower heads left for winter protection can be cut off now. Shorten any thin or older shoots of mop head and lace cap hydrangeas to their lowest bud.

Prune Chaenomeles (ornamental quince) and Forsythia after they have finished flowering. Check roses for black spot, remove any infected leaves and treat with a fungicide. [Read more…] about Gardening Tips for April by Wellie

Maiden Flight

March 21, 2016 By Mike Sedgwick 4 Comments

In the age of steam every boy wanted to be an engine driver. In my boyhood this desire became a fighter pilot and in modern times it might be an astronaut or a pop star. The nearest I got to being a fighter pilot was to sit in the cockpit of a spitfire and press the firing button. Then came the jet age and we aspired to becoming test pilots.

Then, seventy years later, I was to be a test pilot. A group of us had bought a new glider, a top of the range Duo Discus XLT with a 20 M wingspan. [Read more…] about Maiden Flight

Chandler’s Ford Produce and Craft Market for the Community

March 20, 2016 By Janet Williams 3 Comments

Are you aware there is a Produce and Craft Market in Chandler’s Ford?

It’s held at the Age Concern Centre on Brownhill Road (to be precise – just next to the Co-op and the Fryern Arcade).

Yes – the market is where you get to buy special gifts from crafters who make the gifts themselves, and buy fresh fruits and vegetables without the plastic packaging.

Gardening Tips for March from Wellie

March 1, 2016 By Wellie Leave a Comment

Lift and divide overgrown clumps of herbaceous perennials that were not split in the Autumn.

Overcrowded clumps of snowdrops and winter aconites can be lifted and divided after they have finished flowering.

Shrubs can be moved now and should re-establish quickly.

Now is an ideal time to feed plants with a balanced fertiliser such as fish, blood and bone or Growmore. [Read more…] about Gardening Tips for March from Wellie

Why Don’t Cyclists Use Cycle Lanes?

February 27, 2016 By chippy minton 11 Comments

“Is there anyone out there who can give me a good reason why a lot … not all … of cyclists ride on the road when there is a perfectly good, and expensively made cycle way nearby?

For example, Castle Lane from Chandler’s Ford to Baddesley, Baddesley to Rownhams, Bishopstoke to Eastleigh?”

So asks a recent post on Streetlife, a popular local Social Media site. [Read more…] about Why Don’t Cyclists Use Cycle Lanes?

Growing up in Chandler’s Ford: 1950s – 1960s: Witnessing My First Powerboat Race (Part 11)

February 19, 2016 By Martin Napier 1 Comment

growing up in Chandler's Ford Martin Napier

As 1963 started, I found myself more embroiled in preparations for the crucial exams in the spring.

My real energies were directed towards bikes and boats though!

I was never a very keen scholar, and spent far more time studying boats in magazines, than I did revising!

I knew I was poor at maths and physics, so effectively gave up on those subjects, and concentrated on English, History and Geography, where I knew I had hopes of positive results. [Read more…] about Growing up in Chandler’s Ford: 1950s – 1960s: Witnessing My First Powerboat Race (Part 11)

How Have Your Reading Habits Changed?

February 12, 2016 By Allison Symes 6 Comments

The natural follow up to my recent post about favourite forms of writing is about my favourite forms of reading in all its forms – non-fiction, fiction, poetry, books, magazines, e-books, newspapers.

It also takes a brief look at reading habits given it is not just a question of print media any more for sources of reading material. [Read more…] about How Have Your Reading Habits Changed?

growing up in Chandler's Ford Martin Napier

I returned to the weekly “Club Room” meets throughout the Autumn & winter of 1961/2, with The Cyclists Touring Club. Their Southampton Section, as it was titled, organised weekly Sunday club-runs (rides), to a variety of destinations, always with afternoon tea booked at a venue.

These venues varied in type, from pubs that provided simple bread, cake and tea, meals, to the few cafes, or even a couple of farmhouses! [Read more…] about Growing up in Chandler’s Ford: 1950s – 1960s: Bikes, Boats, and Adventures (Part 10)

Growing up in Chandler’s Ford: 1950s – 1960s: My Passions with Bikes and Boats (Part 9)

February 10, 2016 By Martin Napier 1 Comment

growing up in Chandler's Ford Martin Napier

I think that my ‘awareness’ of motor boats probably came from the early days of our little family moving from London to Chandler’s Ford.

Dad used to take us to Southampton, on a Saturday afternoon, and would see motor launches on Southampton Water from the Royal Pier, and also from my favoured ‘window seat’ of Mayes’ restaurant, where we often enjoyed afternoon tea, looking out across the Pirelli factory towards the “New Docks”. Welcoming Year of Monkey: 8 February 2016

February 8, 2016 By Janet Williams 6 Comments

Today is the first day of the Chinese New Year 2016.

It’s the Year of the Monkey, my Zodiac Year of Birth, which is known as 本命年 (Běn mìng nián).

Traditionally a lot of Chinese believe that your zodiac year (12 years as a cycle) will bring danger and misfortune, so you need to wear something red.

To ward off evil spirits, apparently one has to wear red underwear too. [Read more…] about Welcoming Year of Monkey: 8 February 2016

They are beautiful as cut flowers with a heavenly scent. You can sow them in March but you’ll have better plants, with longer flowering stems, if you sow them now. [Read more…] about Gardening Tips for February from Wellie

News from Eastleigh parkrun

January 6, 2016 By chippy minton 7 Comments

Eastleigh Park Run

There were extra opportunities for a parkrun over the Christmas period in Eastleigh.

As well as the standard Saturday morning events, runs were also organised for Christmas and New Year’s Day mornings. In addition, the New Year’s Day events in Winchester and Southampton started 90 minutes later.

This gave the truly dedicated a total of five parkruns in nine days.  I managed three of the five – so I must be semi-dedicated. [Read more…] about News from Eastleigh parkrun

Gardening Tips for January from Wellie

January 1, 2016 By Wellie 1 Comment

This is a great time to plan what you would like to do in the garden for the rest of the year, take a note book and walk around the garden.

Look at seed catalogues for ideas of what to sow.

Midwinter can be a tough time for wildlife in the garden. Make sure there is a continuous supply of food and fresh water. [Read more…] about Gardening Tips for January from Wellie

Gardening Tips for December from Wellie

December 1, 2015 By Wellie Leave a Comment

Keep raking up those leaves from the lawn and borders.

From now until the end of March is the time to plant any bare rooted trees, shrubs and roses.

Check stored fruit, throw out any that are rotten.

Reduce watering on houseplants. [Read more…] about Gardening Tips for December from Wellie
