Hiltingbury Road Closure: Hursley Road and Ashdown Road Section

October 27, 2015 By Janet Williams 1 Comment

My son and I walked to the post office in Hiltingbury yesterday to buy Star Wars stamps and saw a few Road Closed signs.

Road closure Hiltingbury Road

Is the whole of Hiltingbury Road closed to traffic?

No.

Where is the road closed?

Hiltingbury Road – between Hursley Road and Ashdown Road only.

When?

From 24th October to 1st November 2015.

Reason of Closure:

By Southern Water: to allow for drainage works to be undertaken.

You can't enter Hiltingbury Road from this junction.

To visit shops on Hiltingbury Road, you could go through Hursley Road – Winchester Road – Hiltingbury Road.

The “Road Ahead Closed” signs might have affected local businesses at the other end of Hiltingbury Road. People might have thought the whole of Hiltingbury Road is shut.

No wonder Sarah Guilder from Bay Leaves Larder put a note on some Road Closed signs telling people that businesses are open as usual.

“Bay Leaves Larder is open as usual, so are all the other shops.”

“The road is only closed near traffic lights by Hursley Road.”

The other day my friend Allison said she has been having fun “spotting the numpty” on Hiltingbury Road. (Allison is a dog walker; you can’t blame her.)

Allison said: “…cars are STILL turning into Hiltingbury Road despite Road Closed signs and the presence of a massive digger part way down the road completely blocking it!”

(I would like to thank Allison for teaching me this Scottish word, “numpty”)

Best numpty so far was last night when Adrian and I were heading home after walking the dog. We saw a breakdown recovery lorry with a BMW on it go through the Road Closed sign, head down into the Hiltingbury Road dip and come to a halt, realising it was stuck. It couldn’t turn round because people from the flats are having to park their cars in the road at the moment so the lorry did the only thing it could do – reverse all the way back up the hill! Adrian and I watched to see if it would hit the keep left sign. It didn’t though it it seemed a close call. The only other thing I would add is a plea to cyclists who are coming through and using the pavement to get around the works is please, please, please slow right down for pedestrians (of all ages and whether they’re walking dogs or not). I have to say I don’t see what more Southern Water/Clancy Docra could have done here. The signs are clear enough!
