March 2015 Highlight: Comedy Worth a Fortune by Chandler’s Ford MDG Players

February 27, 2015 By Janet Williams 2 Comments

You may not believe this but March is approaching.

In Chandler’s Ford, the highlight for March will be Worth a Fortune, a farcical comedy by Frances A Lewis, performed by Chandler’s Ford MDG Players.

Chandler’s Ford MDG Players will perform Worth a Fortune from Thursday to Saturday, 26th – 28th March 2015 at 7.30pm, in the Methodist Church Hall on Winchester Road, Chandler’s Ford SO53 2GJ.

Date: Thursday, Friday and Saturday 26th, 27th and 28th March 2015 at 7.30pm

Venue: Chandler’s Ford Methodist Church Hall, Winchester Road, Chandler’s Ford SO53 2GJ

Setting out to assure his aunt that he is living a sober and respectable life so as to convince her to leave him a considerable fortune in her will, Timothy weaves an ever increasing web of deceit involving family, the maid, and even the vicar!

Ex-wife Lavinia’s presence really doesn’t help either. A recipe for an evening of laughter!

Book your seats early for this very funny play.

Tickets: £6.00 available from the Church Coffee Room, Box Office: 023 8025 3922,
or email John Discombe: johndiscombe@talktalk.net.

History of Chandler’s Ford MDG Players

Chandler’s Ford MDG Players is the oldest amateur dramatic group in Chandler’s Ford. In 2013, MDG Players celebrated its 50th anniversary.

Mike Standing, chairman of Chandler’s Ford MDG Players, told me that Chandler’s Ford MDG Players were formed in January 1963 and 2013 marked 50 years of uninterrupted productions of a wide variety of plays, musicals and entertainments.

Mike Standing said, the first play was Christmas Rose by R Wilfred Massey, the programmes selling for 3d (old pence) and the successful production leading to a donation to the Spastics Society of £15. “Not bad when you consider that the average weekly wage in England was about the same!”

Nowadays, the programmes are free and the group gives much more to various charities in our locality. Their 50th anniversary production Love, Loss and Latte was written by one of its gifted members, Sarah Sullivan.

Year 2013: celebrating 50th anniversary

On reaching the major milestone in 2013, Mike Standing said,

“We are naturally proud to have reached the anniversary, as very few groups achieve this milestone, and it is due not only to the talents of our members over the years, but also to the loyal support of you, our audience. So, on behalf of MDG Players, Thank You.”

Reverend John Archer, also a member of MDG Players, told me each MDG Players’ production usually attracts audiences of 350 to 400 over 3 nights.

The group is fortunate in having its own dedicated stage and lighting. They have developed a good reputation for excellent stage sets as they have plenty of time to build them.

Chandler’s Ford MDG Players is very friendly and new members are soon feeling at home. John Archer said that they are always looking for new members both on stage and backstage – especially young men actors.

Whilst it is a church based group, the membership is not essentially linked to the church and there are a number of non church members.
