What’s Happened to Gibson’s Card Gallery at the Mall?

April 10, 2015 By Janet Williams 7 Comments

Update on 1st May 2015: Gibson’s Card Gallery reopened two weeks after this post was first published.

The owners of Gibson put a note on the shop window about its brief closure for 2 weeks: “Please use us or lose us!”

“Please use us or lose us!”

“…We are happy to state that we have NO plans to close our shop here in Chandler’s Ford and relocate.

However trading trends may change our minds and opinion in the future.

Please remember that we really do need your support and continued custom and from the rest of the community of Chandler’s Ford.”

To use a well used adage: “Please use us or lose us!”

The original post: see below:

This morning I went to the library and was surprised to see Gibson’s Card Gallery at Unit 12, The Mall on Winchester Road was closed.

On the door was a notice issued on behalf of the landlord.

The notice issued yesterday stated that “the Lease is forfeited and the premises have been secured.”

“…no one can lawfully enter the premises unless they have been given authorisation by the Landlord.”

Many locals were shocked by the sudden closure of Gibson's Card Gallery today.

Gibson’s Card Gallery has been selling cards, balloons and gifts at the corner of the Mall for many years. It is one of the oldest shops at The Mall and the Fryern Arcade.

I’m not sure what has happened to the Gibson’s Card Gallery. This morning a few people were outside the shop. One man told me he was trying to buy a birthday balloon from Gibson’s, and was shocked to see its door closed.

What a great shame. Dukes went much the same way, but at least they resurrected recently where the Post Office used to be in Fryern Arcade. Let’s hope the card shop can survive in another form.

I love these little gift shops. We lost The Precinct Gift Centre in 2006. The shop was run by our good neighbours Brian And Suzette Matthews.

I’ve got Brian And Suzette Matthews’ stories and pictures and will write about them soon.

As evens a shame it looks like the landlords have little empathy with Chandler’s Ford and the local area. I think quite few businesses have had to move on due to high costs.

That’s sad to read another independant shop closing – maybe it’s because of W H Smiths moving into the Fryern Arcade?

What an awful shame! My Mum used to work part time in the card shop, and my sister and I loved helping by pricing up all the stock (I must have been about 10 years old).

As an adult I used the shop regularly, as I knew I could find just the right card and not have to spend £4, like Waitrose quite often charge!

The staff were always chatty and friendly. Their closure is very sad, let’s hope it’s not permanent.

Unsure if it’s related but planning permission has just been granted to convert the offices/nightclub area upstairs into residential flats.
