Growing up in Chandler’s Ford: 1950s – 1960s: My Passions with Bikes and Boats (Part 9)

February 10, 2016 By Martin Napier 1 Comment

growing up in Chandler's Ford Martin Napier

I think that my ‘awareness’ of motor boats probably came from the early days of our little family moving from London to Chandler’s Ford.

Dad used to take us to Southampton, on a Saturday afternoon, and would see motor launches on Southampton Water from the Royal Pier, and also from my favoured ‘window seat’ of Mayes’ restaurant, where we often enjoyed afternoon tea, looking out across the Pirelli factory towards the “New Docks”. Eastleigh Borough Council Explains Why Local Plan Exhibitions Exclude Chandler’s Ford

January 22, 2016 By SO53 News 2 Comments

Thanks to Peter Child’s recent email to Eastleigh Borough Council, Chandler’s Ford residents now have an answer as to why the Eastleigh Borough Local Plan exhibitions exclude Chandler’s ford.

Tracy Haskett, Planning Officer of Eastleigh Borough Council, encouraged Chandler’s Ford residents who are interested in Eastleigh Borough Local Plan (2011-2036) to attend the next nearest event in Allbrook Hill on Saturday 23 January, 10am until 4pm. Steve Brine MP: Call for Future Local Plan Exhibitions to Include Chandler’s Ford

January 19, 2016 By SO53 News 10 Comments

Message from Steve Brine MP

Eastleigh Borough Council Local Plan is a saga that has dragged on for many years while neighbouring local authorities (including Winchester in the other part of my constituency) have theirs signed off.

Now, the council is finally running its “Issues and Options” consultation – until 17th February – which will eventually lead to a plan that maps out future development right across the Borough. [Read more…] about Steve Brine MP: Call for Future Local Plan Exhibitions to Include Chandler’s Ford

News from Eastleigh parkrun

January 6, 2016 By chippy minton 7 Comments

Eastleigh Park Run

There were extra opportunities for a parkrun over the Christmas period in Eastleigh.

As well as the standard Saturday morning events, runs were also organised for Christmas and New Year’s Day mornings. In addition, the New Year’s Day events in Winchester and Southampton started 90 minutes later.

This gave the truly dedicated a total of five parkruns in nine days.  I managed three of the five – so I must be semi-dedicated. [Read more…] about News from Eastleigh parkrun

Read Bill Bryson’s Portrayal of Eastleigh Town. Do You Agree?

December 28, 2015 By Janet Williams 18 Comments

This Christmas I spent an enormous amount of time doing something rather strange.

I found myself ‘defending Eastleigh’ a lot to my family.

The problem was that I started reading Bill Bryson’s new book, The Road to Little Dribbling, on Christmas day, after gift-giving, and before mother-in-law’s turkey was ready. This book has now topped the UK hardback charts for the third week. [Read more…] about Read Bill Bryson’s Portrayal of Eastleigh Town. Do You Agree?

Christmas Then and Now

December 21, 2015 By Doug Clews 1 Comment

As a child in Chandler’s Ford, Christmas was a special time for my family and me, albeit mostly during WW2, as I was 5½ at the outbreak.

I was, to all intents and purposes, an only child (my sister, Jean, died from Scarlet Fever aged 7, 4 years before I was born), so, I guess, understandably, I was ‘spoilt’ (so I was often told). [Read more…] about Christmas Then and Now

999, 111, 101, 112? Emergency Numbers You Must Know

December 4, 2015 By chippy minton 31 Comments

*** Please note that information in this article was correct at date of first publication (December 2015), but may have changed subsequently.  Please use more up to date sources for the most recent information on emergency numbers ***

It used to be just 999 for the emergency services, but now there is a whole host of numbers we can use to summon help.  But which is which, and when should we use them?

999 – The main emergency number

This is the emergency number for police, ambulance, fire brigade, coastguard, cliff rescue, mountain rescue, cave rescue, etc. Note the important word ‘EMERGENCY’. This number should be used only when urgent attendance by the emergency services is required – for example someone is seriously ill or injured, or a crime is in progress.

Calls are free, and 999 can be dialled from a locked mobile phone. [Read more…] about 999, 111, 101, 112? Emergency Numbers You Must Know

A Night in the Cells

December 3, 2015 By Doug Clews 2 Comments

I read the appeal for help by Hampshire Police to find a missing teenager in Chandler’s Ford, which led me to a post by Mike Sedgwick back in April about Chandler’s Ford Policing: Burglaries and Traffic Problems and the fate of Eastleigh Police Station.

These stories in turn led me back to my own memories … [Read more…] about A Night in the Cells

CVathon for Marie Curie and Sophia’s Footsteps

November 23, 2015 By Ray Fishman Leave a Comment

What is a CVathon?

It is a 24 hour Cardiovascular challenge. And that is what happened for Charity at The Club at Chilworth Manor from 8p.m. Friday 25th September to 8 p.m. Saturday 26th September 2015.
