Dead head daffodils as they fade, but allow the foliage to die down naturally.
Plant in the garden any forced bulbs that you had growing indoors such as hyacinths and daffodils so that they can add more colour to your garden next year. Feed borders with a general purpose fertiliser, but feed acid loving shrubs such as azaleas, rhododendrons and camellias with an ericaceous fertiliser.
It is best to get supports into borders early, so that plants can grow up through them. Shrubs can be moved now and should re-establish quickly. Lift and divide overgrown clumps of herbaceous perennials that were not split in the Autumn. Overcrowded clumps of snowdrops and winter aconites can be lifted and divided after they have finished flowering.
This is the last chance to prune wisteria before it starts to grow. Apply a high nitrogen spring/summer lawn fertiliser in late March. Rake lawns with a spring tine rake to remove any moss and thatch. Remove net coverings placed over ponds to protect it from autumn leaf fall. Plant first early potatoes now. Lettuce, rocket, carrots and peas can be sown outside when the soil has warmed up.
