From Brownhill Surgery to Co-op Chandler’s Ford Funeralcare

Meanwhile, let’s keep you updated about some local news. Two weeks ago, we asked you to guess this building, and some of you rightly said that it used to be the good old Brownhill Surgery.

Brownhill Surgery closed on 30th November 2017

On 22nd April this year, during the St. George’s Day parade, the building was seen wrapped up like a giant parcel.

And now, the new sign Chandler’s Ford Funeralcare is up.

Prior to 1966, the Doctor’s on the corner of Winchester Road and Brownhill Road was a Chemist … it was something else before that, but as to what, my memory fails me … ‘Eric Robinson’s’ is built on the site of what used to be a 1800’s pair of semi-detached houses, No’s 6 & 8 Brownhill Road … we used to live in No:8 … all good memories …

Wow! Doug. This place has changed a great deal. The ‘waxing’ place (image 1) is not far away.

Those shops, bank, etc are on The Parade, Bournemouth Road.

The bank was there in the 50,s, but the cycle shop had gone before my time, but the buildings are unmistakeable.

Photo No 2 I would guess was the train station perhaps the re-opening of the line but that’s a guess as after my time in C / Ford.

No 3 the shops would be the Parade although cannot remember the cycle shop even in the late 1940’s early 50s, but the bank was there did it become the Nat West bank on the other side as Lloyds was on the butchers side later.

      Roger,

Yes there was also a Westminster Bank. Francis Frith has some photos of the Parade.

Visited the New ALDI STORE today.
Turn left at the big ASDA Roundabout when driving FROM Chandlers Ford Station TOWARDS ASDA.
Down to the second Roundabout turn left and left again into the Car Park.
Well laid out inside with wide aisles.
    Check it out.

Photo 2 was of Charlie Dimmock officially opening the new Chandler’s Ford Railway Station. I can’t remember the date or year.

Photo 3 was of Shops on The Parade. I opened my first bank account at that National Provincial bank in 1967. It is now the Marie Curie offices.

      Brilliant answers, Debby. Thank you!

Photo 2 was indeed the re-opening of Chandler’s Ford Railway station.
