Wellie’s Gardening Tips for April 2020

April 4, 2020 By Wellie 1 Comment

Check roses for black spot, remove and destroy any infected leave and treat with a fungicide. Cotinus and Sambucus grown for their foliage effect can be cut back now.

Prune Penstemons and other slightly tender plants, such as Teucrium now. Marguerites, Pelargoniums and Fuchsias can be pinched out now to encourage bushy growth.

Feed borders with a general purpose fertiliser. Check for aphids on plants in greenhouses and garden. Weeds on paths can be sprayed this month, when they are actively growing.

Start supporting perennials before they get too big and flop over. A wide range of vegetables can be sown directly in to prepared drills,eg carrots, turnips, spinach and lettuces.

Apply a spring feed to lawns to encourage strong growth.
