The Flying Scotsman in Scotland

June 5, 2017 By Rick Goater 5 Comments

Following Janet’s post with Carl Maskelyne’s pictures of the “Flying Scotsman” locomotive, I thought I’d post this short video of it pulling a train out of Stirling the other day.

It’s a fine beast and my video clip, though a bit amateurish, builds the expectation nicely, giving brief glimpses of smoke in the trees, before it bursts into view in all its splendour.

Flying Scotsman in Stirling, Scotland.

About Rick Goater

I have never lived in Chandler's Ford, though know bits of it well because both sets of grandparents lived there and I often visited.

I was fascinated by descriptions of rural life there during the 1930s and '40s and I have to admit it, am a bit depressed by its urbanisation since then.

I'm retired now, having worked first as a warden and ranger on mainly estuarine nature reserves (the Severn, the Solway and Montrose Basin) after which I spent ten years in Ecological Consultancy, based in Cambridge and then in Central Scotland.

Wildlife, especially birds, and wild habitats are what interest me and I'm most at home on British off-shore islands during migration time - the Scillies, the Isle of May, Shetland and Orkney, the Western Isles.

On the mainland, the New Forest is still a favourite place, though a long way from my home near Dunblane and sadly, somewhat depleted in its wildlife since I first knew it.

Lovely pictures of the Flying Scotsman from Scotland and Chandler’s Ford. I had the
great pleasure of sitting on it and dining very recently. We went from Bristol to
Bishops Lydeard and then on to Minehead. A wonderful 80th Birthday present!

80th Birthday celebration! Happy Birthday to you, Anne.

A few of our writers are over the age of 70s, and last time I talked to war veteran Frank Damerell, who is over the age of 90. It’s lovely to know we have a wide range of readers.

What food did they serve on the train? I wonder.

      All my best wishes,

      Janet

Janet asks what we ate on the Scotsman.

        Canapes.

        roasted Heritage Beetroot, with Crumbled
        Goats Cheese & Walnuts
served with a mixed leaf Salad.

        ……..

        Roasted lamb
served with Chive Mash, Honey glazed carrots,
        Green Beans and Redcurrant jus.

        …………..

        Blackcurrant delice
        with fresh strawberries and Mint.

We had delightful travelling companions and the meal was served over
        6 hours.

        A truly memorable trip.

          Dear Anne,

Many thanks for sharing this detailed list. Wow!!! It sounds truly amazing! Strawberries – I can’t wait for the summer to come.

That’s it! If I were to make a bucket list, the Flying Scotsman will be top on the list. Steam trains evoke nostalgia and it’s so lovely to feel we could escape to another world while appreciating the beauty of nature. I wouldn’t think the train has wifi facility, or noisy passengers speaking loudly on their mobile phone?

Many thanks again sharing your wonderful trip.

You can’t be 80 Anne! It doesn’t seem that long ago that I was swinging you round by your legs somewhere in the New Forest. But then, come to think of it – I suppose I was only in my mid-teens! Many thanks for your comment and glad you had a great time on the train.
