Carl Maskelyne from Chandler’s Ford took these wonderful pictures of the Flying Scotsman when it came through Chandler’s Ford yesterday morning (Wednesday 31st May 2017).
These photos were taken at the new footbridge in Sutherland Way just down from Chandler’s Ford station (heading towards Flexford Road). There was around 50 people there and the Flying Scotsman came through at around 10:25am.
Carl told me he understands that you can also see the Flying Scotsman again on Saturday evening when it is doing a similar loop from Salisbury, through Southampton, Eastleigh and Romsey before heading back to Salisbury.
According to the Flying Scotsman website, the nation’s favourite locomotive was originally built in Doncaster for the London and North Eastern Railway (LNER), emerging from the works on 24 February 1923 and initially numbered 1472. It was designed by Sir Nigel Gresley as part of the A1 class – the most powerful locomotives used by the railway.
When it was selected to appear at the British Empire Exhibition in 1924 in London, the loco had been renumbered 4472 – and been given the name ‘Flying Scotsman’ after the London to Edinburgh rail service which started daily at 10am in 1862.
In 1934, Scotsman was clocked at 100mph on a special test run – officially the first locomotive in the UK to have reached that speed.

National Railway Museum also shares an old video, which shows an impressive chase of the Flying Scotsman filmed in the late 1960’s with a 8 mm camera from a car by John Arnott-Brown, a trainspotter and prolific amateur filmmaker.

Sorry Sujata, I couldn’t find the details from the official website. I’ve asked Carl to respond to this thread if he knows of more details. (p.s. Carl is not a trainspotter!)
It leaves Victoria at 17:15pm and does a loop including Salisbury, Southampton and Winchester. They won’t publish times to stop people trespassing so it’s a question of searching on the day and see if any rail enthusiasts have worked it out. If I was guessing I think Eastleigh/Winchester could be around 7:30-8:30pm but it depends if it stops off anywhere along the route. Don’t rely on this time it is just a guess. There are some Facebook pages on the Flying Scotsman so may be worth posting on one of them.
