Everything in the garden is in full swing now. Dead head spent flowers so that the plants don’t use all their energy into making seedheads, rather they can produce more blooms instead.
Carry on cutting the lawns regularly, mow in different directions to prevent wear patterns and to encourage upright growth.
Keep watering plants, especially newly planted ones, young vegetables, containers and hanging baskets.
Cut down daffodil bulbs now as it has been at least 6 weeks since they flowered.
Stake tall or floppy plants before they get damaged by any winds.
Check roses for signs of blackspot, aphids and leaf rolling sawfly damage.
Net soft fruit bushes to stop the birds taking the fruit. Remove side shoots from cordon grown tomatoes. Early potatoes should be ready this month, wait until they flower then rootle around in the soil to see how big the tubers are.
Support broad beans as they grow and pinch out the growing tips to discourage black fly. Remove sideshoots from cordon tomatoes and train plants up supports. Pinch out new shoots on fig trees to five leaves, to keep the plant compact.
As everything in the borders is growing and filling up, if there are any gaps, plant them with summer bedding plants. This will give instant colour and stop weeds taking over.
Another tip. One a warm summer evening take a glass of whatever you fancy and a good book. Sit in the garden in a comfortable chair, watch the sky and listen to the birds and read a few pages of the book. On the other hand, you could trim the borders, pull a few weeds or prune you wife’s favourite hibiscus like I just did.
