Easter at the Parish Church of Chandler’s Ford

March 5, 2016 By Hugh Benham 6 Comments

The Passion of Christ: Sunday 20 March (Palm Sunday) 2016 at 6.30pm – a selection of readings, hymns, and anthems sung by St. Boniface Choir.

Easter Praise: Sunday 27 March (Easter Day) 2016 at 6.30pm – readings, hymns and an anthem for Easter Sunday evening.

St Boniface Church Easter 2016

The choir of St. Boniface Church, Chandler’s Ford is busy preparing for a number of services before and during the Easter season.

On Palm Sunday, the Sunday next before Easter (20th March) at 6.30pm there is a service entitled The Passion of Christ, which will give worshippers a chance to reflect on the story of Holy Week. The choir will sing several anthems, and there will be familiar hymns and readings.

On Easter Day, in addition to the morning Eucharist at St. Boniface, the choir will sing in a special service that will replace Evensong – it is called Easter Praise and will include a number of well-known Easter hymns, an anthem, readings, and a short ‘reflection’ in place of a sermon.

Surely the singing in the Palm Sunday service won’t include “Alleluia” !!

As I understand from the notes that Hugh sent me, The Passion of Christ service includes these hymns:

    ALL SING ‘Lift high the Cross’ (AH 437 – verses 1, 6, 9, 11)
CHOIR ‘Take up your cross’. Words and music by Ronald Corp (b. 1951)
CHOIR ‘Ave verum corpus’. Words 14th-century, anon.; music by William Byrd (c.1540‒1623)
ALL SING ‘I cannot tell’. verses 1 and 2 (AH 327)
CHOIR ‘Lord, for thy tender mercy’s sake’. Words from J. Bull, Christian Prayers and Holy Meditations (1568); music by (?)John Hilton (1560–1608)
ALL SING ‘Saint Peter, when the cock crew clear’ (adapted from a hymn by Mrs C.F. Alexander)
ALL SING ‘My song is love unknown’ verses 1–5 (AH 521)
ALL SING ‘There is a green hill far away’ (AH 740)
CHOIR ‘It is a thing most wonderful’. Words: W.W. How; music by Peter Moger
ALL SING ‘Praise to the Holiest’ (AH 627)
ALL SING ‘When I survey the wondrous Cross’ (AH 820)
CHOIR ‘O Saviour of the World’. Words: collect, BCP; music by John Goss (1800–1880)

I looked at the list of hymns before I read your comment asking me for my favourite. Love Unknown is one of my favourite hymns of all seasons.

A few years ago the choir that my father sings with performed in a service that was broadcast on local radio on Easter Day. The service was recorded a couple of weeks earlier, and the clergy were a little perturbed that the Easter hymns with “alleluia” were being sung during what was actually still Lent.
