A New Piano Sonata by Hugh Benham

October 24, 2015 By SO53 News 1 Comment

A new Piano Sonata by Hugh Benham, Director of Music at St. Boniface Church of England Church, Chandler’s Ford, was recently performed in a concert at St John the Baptist’s Church, Wimbledon by the pianist Michael Higgins.

The sonata is in three movements and lasts for about 20 minutes – the style is ‘modern’ but not aggressively so, and lovers of piano music may enjoy this piece. It has been recorded privately and a limited number of copies on CD are available at £7.

Michael Higgins was the organist on Hugh’s CD of choral music published in 2011. Michael Higgins is Director of Music at St John’s, Wimbledon. He regularly collaborates with the well-known choirmaster Gareth Malone, and he appeared on the Queen’s Christmas Message in 2012, accompanying the Military Wives Choir (filmed at Buckingham Palace).

The sonata was dedicated to Geoffrey Lanham, one of whose abstract paintings (oil on board, 7 inches by 5) appears on the front of the CD.

Well done Hugh. I will look forward to hearing it when I get back from Sri Lanka. Please save me a copy.
Twenty minutes is a lot of music to create.
