Now that strawberries have finished fruiting, it’s time to propagate new plants.
Pot up runners in a mixture of multi- purpose compost and sand. Take cuttings of tender perennials such as pelargoniums and fuchsia to over winter.
Plant spring bulbs, but leave planting tulips until November.
Keep dead heading dahlias to prolong flowering. Lift and divide perennials. Give evergreen hedges a final trim this month. Keep Camellias and rhododendrons well watered to ensure good flower bud for next year.
Plant prepared hyacinths bulbs for Christmas flowering. Net ponds before leaves start falling. It is not too late to sow lawns with grass seed or to lay turf. Lawns can be topdressed, scarified and aerated.
Water plants in the morning to prevent fungal disease. Clear up plant debris to prevent fungal diseases overwintering. Put grease bands on fruit trees.
