Springtime in Words and Music

Springtime is one of my favourite times of the year. The other one is autumn, funnily enough. I like both ends of the spectrum. Life as it begins and life as it begins to ebb and fade.

I love spotting the Virginia Creeper in our area and seeing it change colour from red to green and back again. Lovely plant. As I walk the dog it is great to spot the crocuses and other spring flowers emerging, though I am a little saddened my snowdrops have now finished.

It is great being able to walk Lady in the early evening and still be in daylight when only a month or so ago, the same time would have seen me coming back home with her in the dark. It also means we can put her light up collar away for a bit. It is odd walking with a glow in the dark dog (at least around her collar!) though she doesn’t care.

The spring is sprung, the grass is riz

I wonder where the birdy is

The bird is on the wing

Everyone knows the wing is on the bird

We’ve been in meteorological spring since the beginning of the month and today, 20th March, is pretty close to non-meteorological spring (which probably has a better name).  And the weekend’s weather has also been spring-like too, for the first time this year.

What better time to visit Hillier Gardens at Ampfield and see the flowers starting to emerge from their winter’s sleep.

Spring Approaches

I know January seemed to last for ever. It always does. I’ve never understood why some months have five weeks and others only four. Wouldn’t it have made more sense to have the same number of weeks per month and perhaps have thirteen months a year? On the plus side, it does mean February will fly by, bringing us into March and the start of that wonderful season, Spring.

The link takes you to a site which explains the historical reasons for the months as we know them, but I still think it is bizarre you can have five Sundays in some months and others get the “bog standard” four! To my mind, something hasn’t been “divvied up” properly.

As One Season Ends…

Do you feel sad as the summer ends? The answer to that will depend a lot, I think, on whether or not you have school age children about to go back to school after the summer break!

I was always annoyed as a kid and later as a parent, to see the Back to School signs appear in the shops just before the children had even broken up for the holidays.
